If not a seminal World War II submarine picture, then Operation Pacific is at least an entertaining one. John Wayne stars as "Duke" Gifford, first officer of the submarine Thunderfish. Patricia Neal is Duke's ex-wife, and when they meet again after four years, the couple tries to recapture "that old zing." Complications arise when Duke goes on a mission with dud torpedoes, and his best friend's younger brother goes after Neal. Fans will be pleased with Wayne's role, as the Gifford character is one of Wayne's simplest, but most honest performances. Wayne regulars Ward Bond and Jack Pennick are on hand as well; Bond plays sub captain "Pop" Perry, and Pennick the sub's Chief. The scene in which Pop tells his crew to "Take 'er down!" came from real life; a sub skipper uttered the famous command during a desperate surface action. --Mark Savary

The Duke, need I say more? October 30, 2009

John Wayne in one of his many military roles. Not much changes in his style but there is a feeling he could have been this character. As always he is "The Duke" and despite the back story of a romance the movie keeps you waiting for the next battle or the next twist. The Sub commanders and crews who are portrayed may cringe over the reality of the plot or even the sets, but they should pop a button with pride that their story is told in such a positive way. No real surprises in the film, the people you know will die are easy to spot in the first 15 minutes...and of course they are key to a great speach or two. Yes this is a keeper.

Excellent WWII submarine action film made with Vice Admiral Charles Lockwood serving as advisor. Rarely seen on television these days, it was once a Milloin Dollar Movie staple. Based on a variety of actual events, the movie adequately represents life aboard a fleet class sub. Of interest is the depiction of problems the USN experienced with unreliable torpedoes. Trying everything, a switch from steel to aluminum contact pins did the trick. It was later discovered that the earth's magnetic field was the culprit.
John Wayne leads an extremely capable and convincing cast that would lead you to believe they are sailors portraying actors rather than the opposite. Those who criticize Wayne's acting abilities really miss the boat here. The Duke plays the commanding role in such obvious comfort and confidence that he dosen't appear to be acting...that's a real actor at work.
Exciting battle sequences set to the tempo of a rousing Max Steiner score plus enough off-the boat drama to keep the land-lubbers happy. If you own this and Run Silent, Run Deep you have the two best movies of the type Hollywood has to offer. Run Silent, Run Deep

It's a John Wayne movie so it's already great, plus it has Ward Bond, Patricia Neal what more can you want and it's a war movie. Kill 'em all let God sort 'em out! Gotta love John Wayne movies.

The movie was good. Especially for those many nights when there is absolutely nothing else worthwile to watch on televison. A little more romance and a little less fighting would have made this an excellent movie. I was satisfied for the remainder of the night.
