Amazon.com essential video Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs in Analyze This, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, natch) suffering from panic attacks who makes a nebbishy shrink (Crystal, natch) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series The Sopranos not underscored how thin and watery and shticky director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in theaters and De Niro's biggest film ever--would seem more fresh and kicky. De Niro's definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace, and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in Grosse Pointe Blank). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay, and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, it's breezy fun. --David Kronke

One of the reasons robert Deniro was honored at the Kennedy Center Awards January 23, 2010 simple sellers Most mafia movies you will hear the f - bomb quite a few times and violence, but it wouldn't be a gangster movie without those things. Unlike most mob movies it is funny.Deniro plays a mob boss who has issues dealing with his feelings. Billy crystal plays his SNARKY,nuerotic shrink , and the guy from the Vanilla Coke Commercials plays the bad guy.
Deniro has the italian new york mob boss down pat, and the part where he cries is COMIC GENIUS. ( he looks like he is trying not to laugh the whole scene.) Joe Viterelli ( who plays jelly) has limited speaking parts, but makes the funniest facial expressions. His reference to bran muffins is hilarious.
A brief comment January 20, 2010 magellan (Santa Clara, CA) This is a very well done and very funny movie, much better than the second one which I just saw last night on HBO. Crystal and De Niro make a great team and it's obvious that they enjoy working together. The script is nothing less than excellent, and there's enough of both the comedy and the drama to keep you involved to the very end. This being a movie about the mafia, the flick could easily have ended up heavy-handed, but Ramis shows a deft and light touch here with his material. Overall a fine flick and significantly better than the sequel, which I could only give 3 stars.
Funny gangster flick; De Niro, as usual, dominates November 30, 2009 Roger J. Buffington (Huntington Beach, CA United States) This is a pretty funny gangster flick in which a mob boss (De Niro) decides that he needs to see a psychiatrist (Crystal) to deal with his anxiety attacks. His colleagues are getting knocked off right and left, often right in front of De Niro--of course he is anxious! As is his custom, De Niro dominates the film with his trademarked impeccable gangster persona. Crystal also turns in a fine performance as the shrink. This is a genuinely funny flick. Personally, I would have liked it better had the humor been a bit more subtle; at times the comedy becomes slapstick, which I am not partial to. Nonetheless, this is a funny and entertaining film. Analyzed It, Loved It! April 5, 2009 GameraRocks (Gillsville, GA USA) I was a little iffy about wanting to see this movie since most Mafia comedies are pretty bad, but I was surprised to discover this movie is actually funny! It is all about De Niro and he definitely makes the movie. Just watching him cry is funny because you just can't really imagine him ever doing so, and watching him break down is hysterical at times. It has a few slow spots here and there, but a very good movie in the end. I highly recommend this movie, there were a lot of times that I busted out laughing! This is the kind of film that you will want to watch again and again!
H I L A R I O U S March 29, 2009 NightStorm (Long Island, NY) Very funny movie. Great storyline, it flowed so smoothly. DeNiro and Crystal played their roles splendidly. I loved this movie.
