Morgan Freeman lends a little gravitas to this gangster story about two drug-dealing partners--D-Mo (Daemon Moore) and Drama (Jeff Edwards)--whose friendship crumbles in the face of too much money and too much stress. Guilty by Association is utterly amateurish; the strangely paced and confusing storytelling is made even more confusing by the arbitrary use of cheap visual effects and bad sound design. Still, despite this--or maybe because of it--the story remains weirdly watchable if you pretend that this a clumsy dramatization in a documentary. Then the poorly constructed surface merely stands in for the real story, which the earnest but stiff acting is meant to evoke but not embody. Not everyone, however, will want to give the movie this much benefit of the doubt. Freeman has a few scattered scenes; his powerful presence momentarily gives the illusion that you're watching something credible. --Bret Fetzer

    1 out of 5 stars Should've been called "Where's Morgan?"   January 8, 2006

I resent the fact that I have to give this a star.
Many thanks to all of the above reviewers. I had much more fun reading your comments than I did in the 15 minutes that I wasted on this abomination. I'll be taking your advice in future and checking out the customer reviews before I buy or rent, especially when the box contains not much more information than Morgan Freeman's face. I'm still a fan, but let's be honest, he deserves a couple of years probation for this one. To be generous, it's possible that someone was holding his grandmother hostage so he had to appear.

3 out of 5 stars MUCH BETTER THAN I EXPECTED   January 7, 2006

Region 1 DVDs are more expensive in Russia than in the US. Usual price is $30 and you won't find one under $10 even in special offer bins. So when I discovered this film in the bin for just $3 (a film with Morgan Freeman's face on the cover!), I couldn't just pass by. It was only at home when I read some reviews...
I was prepared for the worst when started to watch this, but everything appeared to be not as horrendous as I anticipated. Of course it's low-budget and a bit amateur and overly didactic, but it has some positive features also. The acting was decent, and I saw quite a potential in directing. I think given a budget like for a normal movie Po Johns could make it work. In general "Guilty by Association" left an impression of a truthful film, although I admit it's hard to judge living rather far from DC.
But Morgan Freeman was excessive here. I understand his face had to attract attention to the film, but his part was small and not necessary at all. His appearence hit the eye, and the reason he's here for is obvious. Although he might have had his reasons - the movie raises serious questions Freeman might have wanted to contribute.
So in my humble opinion the movie is rather curious and although bad, it's not THAT bad. If I were a producer, I'd raise some money for the next Po Johns' flick - he may come up with something very cool like "New Jack City" or even "Training Day" (at least those were cool movies for me).
