Gregory Nava (Why Do Fools Fall In Love?) directs this more-or-less official film biography of the late Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez (the film is coproduced by her father), which emphasizes sentimentality over conflict and plays down the star's horrific death at the hands of a deranged fan. Jennifer Lopez is quite good as Selena, whose roots we come to know through the story of her father (Edward James Olmos), a Corpus Christi singer who was rejected by white audiences. The script focuses primarily on Selena's inspiring rise, and it tries to muster some sense of urgent conflict over not-particularly-contentious issues (such as her relationship with a guitarist). But Olmos does a fine job portraying the elder Perez as a possessive sort, and the music and general buoyancy of Lopez's performance are infectious. The unavoidable subject of Selena's killer--a woman who happened to be the president of her fan club--is considerably and oddly downplayed. --Tom Keogh

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a very talented Tejano star who was poised to make her crossover debut when she was murdered at the age of 23. Jennifer Lopez gives a good performance in a film that is suitable for the entire family. The soundtrack is outstanding, (the voice you hear is Selena's, Jennifer Lopez lip-synced the lyrics) and much of Selena's wardrobe are near-perfect replicas of her own designs.
The entire cast is outstanding in this movie about family, love, and dreams. This is the story of a Mexican-American girl from Texas who wants to become a star. With the love and support of her entire family, (her brother and sister were in the band, her father was her manager, and after her brother was older, he became her produce. The entire family would travel to shows on their bus with the other band members.
I wish they would have a longer movie because it only gave an overview of her most important years musically. It would have been nice to hear and see full performances of those songs in which only a few words were sung.

I show this movie in my Spanish classes every year and it's one of the few movies that consistently capture their attention. I would have thought that, by now, middle schoolers wouldn't know who Selena was but they all still do and they still love hearing her songs and learning about her.

She and her family had risen together to a level of success they had hardly imagined, and their upward climb showed no signs of stopping. Selena, with her blend of natural talent, boundless energy and magnetic charm, was poised to become popular music's next big superstar, until her life was cut short at the hands of a friend she had thought loyal. Selena is a really good movie. Jennifer lopez did an awsome job acting in the movie its one of her best movies. You will love this movie.
