Title Sums It Up August 12, 2009 Deborah M. Budd (Reading, PA USA) It opens cute, with a scene of friends hunting for a perfect Christmas tree for their shared apartment, and debating the merits of long-needle pine over spruce. The gang of friends heads off to a ski weekend courtesy of one of the group's father, and bed-hopping and wanna-be wackiness ensues. There are a few good performances (David Rasche as the johnny-come-lately dad trying to reconnect with his estranged son, well-played by George Newbern, are two stand-outs). The rest of the mostly B-movie casters turn in okay performances. There is a sweet gay sub-plot, too many annoying scenes involving Stephen Baldwin as the stereotypical, annoying, sex-obsessed member of the group, and some gratuitous nudity and language. Then there is Robert Downey Jr., playing a ski resort Lothario intent on seducing Claudia Schiffer, wielding a comic Austrian accent and one of the more creative seduction techniques you may ever see. He seems to be in a different, funnier movie -- the one I hoped I'd see when I popped this into the DVD player. The direction is a bit aimless, but maybe some key transitions ended up in the editing room trash can. And why did the wonderful Anne Magnusen take a bit part as Rasche's fiancee? What a waste. I'd have killed to see her and Downey mix it up! The film is mild rom-com meets relationship drama. Rent, don't buy.
wonderful movie November 29, 2003 Brett Waters (Colorado Springs, Colorado United States) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I saw this movie and loved the depth of every character and the diversity. Stephen Baldwin had me laughing till the end with his nons top antics. Stunning handling of straight and gay relationships. 5 stars in my book

Apparently I'm the only one who found this movie funny and romantic! I laughed quite a bit, and yes it was campy and the acting probably wasn't the greatest, but I don't think the writer was expecting an Oscar nomination here. Above everything else, us ladies are finally getting pay back for having to sit through female nudity in just about every R rated movie. Friends & Lovers finally showed up some full frontal male nudity, and for that alone I gave it 5 stars! People- don't be so rigid when reviewing a movie! Enjoy the ridiculous too!!!
Embarrasing! August 28, 2002 Giordae (Cincinnati, OH United States) 4 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is a serious contenders for The Worst Movies Ever Hall of Fame.
Nothing to challenging but cute and warm July 30, 2002 Dave Jordan (Boringville, Michigan) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
All of the reviews you have read to this point have been pretty accurate, for the most part. And, yes, I can easily see how this movie would receive anywhere from 1 to 4 stars--it just depends on what mood you're in and what you're looking for. The acting in this film, while not necessarily Oscar material, is cute and suitably campy. The one-liners are very well-timed. The cast is fairly balanced, ranging from a weak performance by Claudia Schiffer all the way to the very creative and noteworthy antics of Stephen Baldwin and Robert Downey Jr. Yes, it's predictable and none too challenging to follow, but if you need cute laughs for the above 18 crowd, you may want to check it out.
