Science fiction took a grim turn in the 1970s--the heyday of Agent Orange, nuclear peril, and Watergate. Suddenly, most of our possible futures took on a "last man on Earth" flavor, with The Omega Man topping the doom-struck heap.

Charlton Heston plays the government researcher behind the ultimate biological weapon, a deadly plague that has ravaged humanity. There are two groups of survivors: a dwindling band of immune humans and an infected, psychopathic mob of light-hating quasi-vampires. The infected are led by Mathias, a clever, charismatic man set on destroying the last remnants of the civilization that produced the plague. Heston has a vaccine--but he and the few remaining normals are outnumbered and outgunned. By day, he builds a makeshift version of the nuclear family (with Rosalind Cash as his afro-wearing, gun-toting little lady). They plan for the future while roaming freely through an empty urban landscape, taking what few pleasures life has left. By night, they defend themselves against the growing horde of plague victims. Both a bittersweet romance and a gothic cautionary tale, The Omega Man paints a convincing portrait of hope and despair. It ain't pretty, but it's a great movie. --Grant Balfour

3 out of 5 stars Great video. Poor audio   May 21, 2009
    Living in Houston (HOUSTON)
The movie is a classic. 5 stars for the movie. This review is for the quality of the blu ray disc. Video quality is 5 star. Audio 1 star. Audio is 1.0 MONO. !?!?!?
If you have a good home theatre receiver you can 'tweak' it to multi channel, but the disc itself is ONE CHANNEL MONO. But for $12, what do you expect?

I was not expecting a film decades old to be of excellent quality when converted to blu ray format. I was surprised and pleased with the excellent picture quality. Recommended. If you are one who can enjoy this genre you will not be disappointed.

I bought this not expecting too much since the film was made in 1971. I saw The Omega Man a few times when I was much younger and always enjoyed the story line and dialogue. However, I was really surprised by the amazing picture quality of this blu-ray disc. The colors are extremely vibrant. The sound quality is also quite good. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT RE-DO done before a more recent RE-DO of a RE-DO   January 18, 2009

Vincent Price starred as Dr. Neville in the original. Charleton Heston in this version and Will Smith in last years version. Of the three, The Omega Man may be the best. Mr. Prices had an extremely low budget and Mr. Smiths seems to have been edited by Stevie Wonder. The latest had the prior two beat on special effects but thats not all there is to making a movie or we would all just be watching Wal-lee all day.
Blu Ray wasnt able to shine with this movie, I would have been just as happy with the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie   January 11, 2009
    Kable (here)
Robert Neville, a doctor, due to an experimental vaccine, is the only survivor of an apocalyptic war waged with biological weapons. The plague caused by the war has killed everyone else except for a few hundred deformed, nocturnal people calling themselves "The Family". The plague has caused them to become sensitive to light, as well as homicidally psychotic. They believe science and technology to be the cause of the war and their punishment, and Neville, as the last symbol of science, the old world, and a "user of the wheel", must die.
