Science fiction took a grim turn in the 1970s--the heyday of Agent Orange, nuclear peril, and Watergate. Suddenly, most of our possible futures took on a "last man on Earth" flavor, with The Omega Man topping the doom-struck heap.

Charlton Heston plays the government researcher behind the ultimate biological weapon, a deadly plague that has ravaged humanity. There are two groups of survivors: a dwindling band of immune humans and an infected, psychopathic mob of light-hating quasi-vampires. The infected are led by Mathias, a clever, charismatic man set on destroying the last remnants of the civilization that produced the plague. Heston has a vaccine--but he and the few remaining normals are outnumbered and outgunned. By day, he builds a makeshift version of the nuclear family (with Rosalind Cash as his afro-wearing, gun-toting little lady). They plan for the future while roaming freely through an empty urban landscape, taking what few pleasures life has left. By night, they defend themselves against the growing horde of plague victims. Both a bittersweet romance and a gothic cautionary tale, The Omega Man paints a convincing portrait of hope and despair. It ain't pretty, but it's a great movie. --Grant Balfour

3 out of 5 stars Just plain WIERD , but truly sci-fi   March 11, 2010
    Seth C. Howard (Apalachin,ny)
This movie also , as "Soylent Green" should be rated PG13 minimum , possibly "R" for nudity alone .
STILL , all in all true apocalyptic Chuck Heston SCI-FI . This plot is still world wide , but a "we against them" type ; SURVIVAL . "EVIL government scientist" Heston becomes a tainted hero . Anthony Zerbe is a GREAT vilain . 2 societies now ; those who survived the plague ravages and those immune or longer onset time of illness . Chuck saves his skin long enough to try to be a hero for the "new world" . HOWEVER , which "new world" will it be ???
WATCH and find out..... who & what is left on earth

4 out of 5 stars Omega Man   March 3, 2010

A great sci-fi movie that has held up very well and compares favorably with current similar films even with their advanced use of special effects.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie, lean extras   February 14, 2010
Paul H. Fackler (MAUSTON, Wisconsin United States)
Movie quality was excellent. The Special Featurette was rather superficial, but not horrible. If you don't demand a lot of in-depth additional features, this is a good way to get a memorable movie on DVD, if the price is modest.
I fell in love with this movie as a teenager. Most of the performances are very strong, and the story is both thought-provoking and gritty. While I loved Vincent Price in the similar "The Last Man On Earth", I prefer the plotting of this 'remake' better, though, as others have noted, the ending here, while attempting to be 'tragic' and/or ironic, comes off rather contrived. Nonetheless,it still wells up my emotions, probably because I've invested myself too much until then.
There's much food for thought in this version of a post-apocalypse world, coupled with servings of action and violence, and a dose of romance. Not perfect, but well above average.

5 out of 5 stars THE OMEGA MAN   February 13, 2010

GREAT MOVIE,SAW IT DURING THE 70S ON T.V..HAD TO HAVE IT.'I AM LEGEND' WAS GREAT ALSO BUT THE OMEGA MAN SURPASSES IT WITHOUT ALL THAT COMPUTER GENERATED STUFF-DOESN'T NEED IT.VINCENT PRICE IN 'THE LAST MAN ON EARTH' IS ALSO A COOL MOVIE.

    5 out of 5 stars A classic   February 5, 2010

It you haven't seen this version of I am Legend....you should! It's a classic! Plus, it has a great 70's feel to the movie
