Amazon.com Smarter than Armageddon and equally extreme, The Core is high-tech Hollywood hokum at its finest. It's scientifically ridiculous, but this variant of Fantastic Voyage at least tries to be credible as it plunges deep into the earth's inner core, where a formulaic team of experts pilot an earth-boring ship to jump-start the planet's spinning molten interior, now stalled by a military secret that could seal the fate of all humankind. It's a geophysicist's wet dream that only a fine ensemble cast could rescue from absurdity, and director Jon Amiel (Entrapment, Copycat) draws excellent work (and plenty of humorous interplay) from Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo, and a host of memorable supporting players, especially The New Guy's D.J. Qualls as the world's greatest cyber-nerd. With enough digital F/X disasters to satisfy anyone's apocalyptic fantasies, this is a popcorn thriller with all the bells and whistles that its genre demands. Sit back, pump up the volume, and enjoy the dazzling ride. --Jeff Shannon

Very entertaining July 3, 2009 Manhattan (NYC) If anyone can imagine it, it could happen. Maybe traveling to the planet's core is impossible now but maybe someday...? This is a very entertaining movie. It's entirely believable. Especially the 'Unobtanium' element. Nicely done. Remember this is not a blueprint on how to organize your next vacation (to the core of the Earth), it's just a movie. Something didn't make sense though: [SPOILER ALERT] _________ At some point someone observes that "The West Coast's gone." [zapped by evil rays] Then, a little while later (about a good week later in the movie), we see one of the characters going into a coffeeshop in Southern California. Just doesn't make sense. That particular scene with the coffee shop should have been set somewhere else.
The Core-Just OK July 1, 2009 Keith Mirenberg (www.spaceanimations.org) The Core was just OK at three stars. I agree with most reviewers that this film was not hard sci-fi, but had some nice ideas, good CGI and fine performances. I don't think there is enough there to warrant several viewings. Note, that the term "unobtainium alloy" referred to in the plot was widely used by many engineers (at least) since 1971 when I heard it jokingly referred to at P&WA's materials research & development lab (MRDL). It was probably coined and used years ago by other engineers and scientists and the author did not originate this cute handle.
mediocre scifi April 22, 2009 Robert J. Crawford (Balmette Talloires, France) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unfortunately, I was very disappointed by this film. I was looking for hard scifi, something that is entirely plausible, yet projected into a fascinating future. Red Planet comes to mind, as does Andromeda Strain: you can really believe the story if you are knowledgeable about science, at least while you're watching it. This film starts promisingly: there are mysterious catastrophes that are linked to man's messing with the Earth's core. They have to fix it. Unfortunately, what they come up with is what can only be called a magical technology: a ray to cuts anything, and a material (for a tunneling device) that is more or less infinitely strong. Once this magic is established, it has to succeed. The characters are the strongest part, as the actors are really good. Also, some of the underground locales are fun. But this isn't good hard scifi. Not recommended, unless you want action rather than hard scifi.
It's fun April 11, 2009 J. T. Woodaz (Fairbanks, AK) Sure, it can be viewed as cheesy or whatnot, but overall it's a decent movie that is rather exciting. You may have to take it with a grain of salt, but once you get by all of that, it is very easy just to have fun with. It appeals to the curiosity of what the inside of the earth actually might be like, which I find rather exciting.
Magic! April 7, 2009 Dr. Serizawa (Utah USA) Where's the love? My daughter and I (we both like b-movies much to the chagrin of my wife) had a simply wonderful time watching this over-the-top romp. Made in the tradition of 50's Sci-Fi schlock, but with a budget that would have enabled Roger Corman to make 1000 movies, The Core is brilliantly funny. There's none of the tongue-in-cheek self-awareness that has ruined so many movies since the execrable Scream series. No, the people making this movie were as serious as those who made the Roland Emmerich crap-science laugh riot "The Day After Tomorrow". And that's why it's so darned funny. To explain all the illogics and plot holes that abound we just credited it all to "magic". Huge gas pockets in the core of the Earth that aren't superheated..... magic! Mind bogglingly impossible coincidences... magic! All you need is a sense of humor and some popcorn. Enjoy!!
