Amazon.com Inspired by O. Henry's short story about a young bride and groom, each of whom foolishly--but quite lovingly--sacrifices a treasured possession to buy the perfect Christmas gift for their mate. Amid a flurry of bustling New Yorkers clad in early-20th-century garb, O. Henry himself (David Wayne) sets the scene: Beth, a teenage orphan (Marie Osmond), comes to live with her wealthy aunt and uncle (the latter played by Donald Moffat). Her friendship with a cheerful kitchen maid soon leads to a stormy encounter with a handsome Swiss immigrant, Rudy (Timothy Bottoms). Despite Beth and Rudy's conflicting social statuses, and Beth's arranged engagement to a sickly bird watcher (a young James Woods, who truly fits the bill), the two fall in love and miraculously overcome these obstacles--all in about 95 minutes. Old-fashioned romance, elegant costumes, and a happy ending make this predictable story completely irresistible to those who love a good fairy tale--or to Osmond fans who fondly remember watching the movie on TV in 1978. Produced by the Osmond Brothers for PBS's American Short Story series. --Liane Thomas

Warm hearted Christmas Movie February 7, 2010 Mary Kwiatkowski (Waterford, WI USA) I really enjoyed this movie. The story is the classic one of the Gift of the Magi.
The scenery & costumes are beautiful. If you have a few hours of free time & it's snowing -
get yourself a cup of hot chocolate, a fuzzy blanket & put the fireplace on. This movie is all
you need to take youself away & get you in the holiday spirit. Two thumbs up...
A Great Christmas Movie December 13, 2009 Utah mom I love this movie. The message is timeless. I remember watching this movie when I was a little girl. I loved it then and I was surprised at how much I love it now. It is exactly as I remember. This is a movie the whole family will enjoy. It was fun to show it to my teenagers. They thought they would hate it but they didn't they thought it was "okay", which translated into parent terms it was better than they thought it would be. The movie is clean, no swearing, no nudity, no inappropriate jokes or innuendos. Just a good old fashioned Christmas Story about being selfless and cherishing the ones you love. Marie and Timothy are fantastic as well as the rest of the cast. I especially enjoyed watching a young James Woods, who plays the nerdy fiance to Marie. The one draw back is with the cinematography, you can definitely tell it was filmed on a sound stage. But other than that this movie is a treasure. I wish they would show it every year on TV. But since they don't I had to buy it.
Wonderful Christmas Movie November 11, 2009 D. R. Brust I remember seeing this movie for the first time many years ago as teenager and loving it back then. I found it again and still love how sweet and innocent a love story this is. It will bring a sweet spirit into your home! I plan on showing it to my teenagers this holiday season. They may think it kindof cheesy but I think they will still like it!
Gift of Love November 6, 2009 Kimberly George (Carmichael, Ca) This is a true classic and a must have for every household, regardless the format you may require. This shows the true meaning of LOVE and SACRIFICE how priorities will give us a cvhance to "walk the talk".
Amazing September 28, 2009 Michael A. Henry 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
I cannot believe that anyone can sit through this "movie." It is sappy, predictable, and intellectually insulting. Ozmond was a marginal singer, and a really bad actor.
If you enjoy this, your connection with reality must really be tenuous.
