Description One of Public Television's Highest Rated Series Now on DVD Television's longest running weekly natural history series has won nearly 250 awards over two decades, including four Emmy Awards, the Parents Choice TV Award, and the only award given to a television program by the Sierra Club. Program 1: Horse and Rider Saddle up and settle in for a hard-charging ride into the fascinating relationship between horse and rider, one of the greatest examples of animal-human cooperation. Program 2: Wild Horses of Mongolia With Julia Roberts Julia Roberts provides us with rare and privileged looks at not only the wild horses, but also the eastern cowboy culture they continue to drive. 112 minutes.

This DVD has two shows. The first is titled The Wild Horses of Mongolia with Julia Roberts as the "star". It is a little bit more about horses than "Silence of the Lambs" was about sheep... but not much more. Roberts herself did not always look like she knew what exactly she was doing in Mongolia, and the show was basically a rambling Pollyana semi-salute to the nomads living in Mongolia for whom horses are part of the meager culture. There is some mundane footage of horses, but not much.
The second half of this DVD is titled "Horse and Rider" and rescues this disc from the trash bin. It uses three riding venues, Dressage, Cutting, and Polo to illustrate some generally valuable information about horses and horsemanship but also some good specifics on differences between the roles of horse and rider in the different sports, and that is good. An even nicer touch is that it directs the viewer to observing horses as individuals (with a very good segment showing a skittish Dressage horse under saddle) rather than looking at them as if they were an ATV with nothing more inside than an on/off button.
It clearly portrays the rider's roles and responsibilities, and that lesson alone is worth the price of the DVD.
