Comedy Gold? 5$ each. Selling $5 DVDs at $15 a piece? Priceless. March 3, 2009 John W. Allen (Ohio, USA)
$478 for 30 DVDs? That would be reasonable if these were rare DVDs, comedies that were difficult to obtain, but they're not. All of these DVDs can be found either in the $5 DVD bin at Walmart, or in a $7.50 DVD Comedy double pack, which would make some of them $3.75 a piece. What 30 DVDs at $478 means is that each DVD basically comes out at $15, almost $16 each! Most of these DVDs are more than a decade old and can be found anywhere. There may be one or two gems in there that cost a little more, maybe $10. It is also apparent that the price has been raised over time, as I see other reviews mention this set for $300, so there has been a roughly 40% increase in price on DVDs that have lost value over time. Any quick Walmart, Target, and right here on Amazon link will show you much cheaper prices. Going by the list given about by another reviewer, here is the current total of all these DVDs available right here on Amazon: Blazing Saddles: $6.99 - New Being There $8.49 - New Caddyshack $9.99 - New Little Shop of Horrors $6.49 - New Joe Versus the Volcano $6.99 - New Dave $8.99 - New (also available as a double feature for $13 with American President) Grumpy Old Men $7.99 (as double feature with Grumpier Old Men) Ace Ventura: Pet Detective $6.99 - New Dumb & Dumber $6.49 - New The Mask $6.49 - New Maverick $6.49 - New Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls $11.49 - New The American President $7.99 - New Grumpier Old Men $7.99 (as part of a two pack) New Michael $6.49 - New Waiting for Guffman $8.49 - New Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery $6.49 - New Wag the Dog $10.99 - New Practical Magic $10.99 - New Rush Hour $8.49 - New The Wedding Singer $9.99 - New You've Got Mail $6.97 - New Analyze This $8.99 - New Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me $6.49 - New Best in Show $13.99 - New Miss Congeniality $6.49 - New The Whole Nine Yards $7.49 - New Ocean's Eleven $6.49 - New Rush Hour 2 $8.99 - New Austin Powers in Goldmember $6.99 - New Grand Total: $222.21 As of 3/3/2009 Not such a good deal now, is it?
not a good deal January 7, 2008 Ali K. Sabir (hamburg, new york United States) Why would any one pay $300 for this collection? When you can get most of these titles for under $7.50 each and under $5 at wal-mart of all places. And if you really look at it do u really want all 30 titles? Every one is sure not to like a few out of this bundle.
Good movies, not so great value March 16, 2007 calvinnme (Fredericksburg, Va) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a good collection of comedy films, primarily from the 90's: Blazing Saddles (1974), Being There (1979), Caddyshack (1980), Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), Dave (1993), Grumpy Old Men (1993), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), Dumb & Dumber (1994), The Mask (1994), Maverick (1994), Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), The American President (1995), Grumpier Old Men (1995), Michael (1996), Waiting for Guffman (1996), Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), Wag the Dog (1997), Practical Magic (1998), Rush Hour (1998), The Wedding Singer (1998), You've Got Mail (1998), Analyze This (1999), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), Best in Show (2000), Miss Congeniality (2000), The Whole Nine Yards (2000), Ocean's Eleven (2001), Rush Hour 2 (2001), Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) There are a couple of classics in there like "Being There" and "Blazing Saddles", but primarily these are just above average crowd-pleasing comedies that just about anybody will enjoy and find funny. The problem is that the newest movie in the bunch is now five years old, with most of them averaging around eleven years of age. Thus even at this greatly reduced price, this collection is still no bargain versus finding them in the sale bin, and all of them are pretty easy to find in that way. I'm giving the collection itself four stars, and the value of the collection two stars - thus my rating of three stars.
Great for someone with no taste and raised in a closet June 25, 2006 bernie (Arlington, Texas) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This collection was designed for someone like me that has no taste. I find just about any comedy funny on different levels. They are contemporary comedies that do not require an acquired understanding of the time or delivery method. The disadvantage is this set still has quit a range of subject matter and a plethora of comics which makes it difficult for discerning viewers from thinking that there are a few clinkers in the collection. Of course if you were not raised in a closet, you probably have the main comedies already so it would be hard to gain an advantage by buying the collection. This would make a great starter present for someone with their first DVD.
Meh. Just meh. December 7, 2003 Dane Marvin (Omaha, NE) 22 out of 24 found this review helpful
You can find most of these DVDs in one fell swoop on e-bay already if you use the search term "DVD lot" and you will end up paying about half the total cost. These are all Warner Bros snapcase DVDs, by the way. Yep, they come in those cases that drive everyone insane because they are cheap beyond a reasonable doubt. It wouldn't surprise me if half these titles are updated by Warner with new 2-disc special editions (in awesome packaging) in the next 2 years or so. Shop around, folks. These are the same movies you see countless times at your local pawn shop for half the cost here. There's nothing special here to be had, and chances are, you'll be paying for at least one title you don't want.
