    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com essential video
It's set during the Korean War, in a mobile army surgical hospital. But no one seeing M*A*S*H in 1970 confused the film for anything but a caustic comment on the Vietnam War; this is one of the counterculture movies that exploded into the mainstream at the end of the '60s. Director Robert Altman had labored for years in television and sporadic feature work when this smash-hit comedy made his name (and allowed him to create an astonishing string of offbeat pictures, culminating in the masterpiece Nashville). Altman's style of cruel humor, overlapping dialogue, and densely textured visuals brought the material to life in an all-new kind of war movie (or, more precisely, antiwar movie). Audiences had never seen anything like it: vaudeville routines played against spurting blood, fueled with open ridicule of authority. The cast is led by Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland, as the outrageous surgeons Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John McIntyre, with Robert Duvall as the uptight Major Burns and Sally Kellerman in an Oscar-nominated role as nurse "Hot Lips" Houlihan. The film's huge success spawned the long-running TV series, a considerably softer take on the material; of the film's cast, only Gary Burghoff repeated his role on the small screen, as the slightly clairvoyant Radar O'Reilly. --Robert Horton

what can I say other than MASH will be a great movie years from now.

5 out of 5 stars I Didn't Care for Donald Sutherland Until...   January 27, 2010

...I watched M*A*S*H (Widescreen Edition). Not to be confused with the TV show starring Alan Alda, this is a hilarious movie with an edge. The first motion picture film to use the F-bomb, an excellent shower scene, adultery, drinking, and general debauchery set against the backdrop of the Korean War. I consider this a must-have for any movie lover's home collection.

5 out of 5 stars M*A*S*H one of the best classic's out there   December 8, 2009
    Rebecca Johnson (Memphis, TN USA)
This movie is one of the best classic movies out there. Anyone that has ever watched the series on television needs to see the movie and see where it all started. The only actor to go from the movie to the series is Gary Burghoff (Radar). He is one of the most loveable people in the movie and series.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, so so transfer   December 2, 2009

Could not wait for the blu-ray release of this classic film. Unfortunately the quality of the transfer was only average. Although the film originally had a somewhat grainy (intentional) look to it, that could not make up for the lack of definition and color saturation. It appears that the studio elected to do a 'down and dirty' quickie transfer rather than spend the money on a full restoration, which is a shame. If you own the original DVD I would save your money and wait (hopefully) for a proper blu-ray re-release sometime in the future.
