Amazon.com essential video Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell got together on Swing Shift--and if that's the main reason people know about this movie, it only has itself to blame. The film has a marvelous subject (women's changing status on the home front during World War II), a hugely attractive cast, and a sympathetic director, Jonathan Demme, whose previous film, Melvin and Howard, had been a splendid piece of Americana. Yet despite this, it feels disjointed. Goldie goes to work at a factory when her husband (Ed Harris) goes off to war; Russell works there too, and they find each other, well, riveting. With the movie wavering between romance and feminist consciousness-raising, the field is open for Oscar -nominated Christine Lahti, who sparkles as Goldie's lanky, wisecracking best friend. Demme's original version of the movie was obscured by reshoots, which might explain the missed opportunity; this could have been a classic. --Robert Horton

WWII Homefront Movie May 7, 2009 James D. Crabtree (Guantanamo Bay, Cuba) This movie looks at the "Rosie the Riveter" phenomena of World War II, in which women stepped in take over the assembly lines of factories which desperately needed manpower. Goldie Hawn plays one of these women while Kurt Russell plays a coworker who winds up seducing her. I like both of these actors but this film wasn't a good vehicle for them. The story is a good one but not suited to Hawn, who seems to do her best in slapstick comedy roles. A good movie, but not one I think I will go out of my way to see again.
Swing Shift January 7, 2008 Kenneth M. Truesdale Swing shift was one of my favorite movies about WWII because it was mostly about what was happening on the home front during that time. Most WWII movies were about the military battles or what was happening in Europe or in the far east.
Swing Shift June 14, 2007 Cynthia A. Rutherford (La Crescenta, CA United States) This is a great movie and the DVD arrived in excellent condition (new).

Was looking for movies with Goldie in them and this is a good movie.
Swing Shift DVD February 23, 2006 N. Lawton (Bath UK) Excellent underrated film depicting the unique issues and trials faced by American women during World War II. There were production troubles/script rewrites and critics had a field day, but with charismatic big names adding weight it ranks as one of the most touching and memorable WWII films that I have seen in recent years.
