Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses. --Jeff Shannon

Fresh, original, a movie worth watching over and over June 23, 2009 Andrew Driscoll (WI) Fresh, original, a movie worth watching over and over. Underworld is a gothic and beautiful film with great acting and a fairly good script. This is the film that started it all, and perhaps should have ended it all.
Awesome movie! June 13, 2009 MissMD (Sun Prairie, WI) I initially saw this movie on TV, and decided I wanted to buy it. Also bought the sequels... I normally don't like scary movies, but this was more like an action, suspense, romeo and juliet love story.
MAYHEM, MONSTERS, ROMANCE, AND TONS OF ACTION June 5, 2009 Geary A., Jones This is one of my favorite vampire flicks of recent years. Retooling the lore of the vampire, and lycanthropy doesn't bother me a bit ( since virtually everyone after Bram Stoker has ). The cinematography, sets, and costumes are really wonderful in this action-packed horror story ( as is true of the sequel, and 'prequel' ). Kate Beckinsale, besides being lovely to look at, carries off her role as a 'death-dealer,' that falls for a doctor ( played adequately by Scott Speedman ) hunted by Lycans, admirably. Bill Nighy is also excellent as the leader of the vampire clan Beckinsale's character belongs to.
Fun, Beautiful Film May 18, 2009 Jeanine Thompson (Denver, CO) Like the story or not there is no denying that this is a beautiful film to look. The overtones and the cinematography make watching the film like looking at gothic art. Kate Beckinsale is great in this movie. If you're into Werewolves and Vampires, you have to check this one out.
