Amazon.com Partly inspired by 1948's The Big Clock and its nominal 1987 remake No Way Out, the Denzel Washington thriller Out of Time is quite enjoyable if you ignore its implausible plotting. Like those earlier films, this reunion of Washington and his Devil in a Blue Dress director Carl Franklin is about a man--in this case the police chief (Washington) of sleepy Banyan Key, Florida--who falls into a trap set by others, sinks into legal quicksand of his own making, and must race the clock to extricate himself from a series of incriminating setbacks. The Florida setting adds welcome character to the potboiler plot, and Washington's screen-cred makes it easy to overlook the absurdities of rookie writer David Collard's screenplay. Eva Mendes is sharp and sensible as Washington's estranged wife (do you think they'll reconcile for a happy ending?), and the talented John Billingsley--whose portrayal of "Dr. Phlox" on TV's Enterprise is vastly underrated--is a constant delight as Washington's medical examiner, beer buddy and wily co-conspirator. It's hardly a classic, but Out of Time goes well with a big tub of popcorn. --Jeff Shannon

Denzel is always good May 27, 2009 Lola (San Angelo, Tx) We had never heard of this movie before but since Denzel was in it we took a chance. It was very good. He is an actor you can always depend on no matter what the story is.
An Entertaining Flick May 17, 2009 S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA) This is a thriller that is pretty good. It is certainly no classic, but it is quite enjoyable. Denzel Washington appears as Matthias (Matt) Whitlock, the corrupt chief of a small town (Banyan Key, Florida) police department. His wife Alex (Eva Mendes) is divorcing him. He is having an affair with a married woman, Ann Harrison (Sanaa Lathan) whose husband is very abusive to her. Ann and her husband are apparently murdered in an arson fire. Matt and his department are not the lead investigators, but he is assisting. Although he is ethically challenged, Matt is apparently not the killer, but more and more of the evidence points to him as the suspect. He is under a lot of time pressure to keep ahead of the investigation and try to find the real killer while avoiding arrest himself. Although several of the plot elements are implausible, all in all, this is an entertaining thriller.
Washington Extends His Charismatic Brand April 9, 2009 Edward S. Brown (Atlanta, GA) Actor Mel Jackson reportedly said that Denzel Washington's movies are a composite of the same character. From a cursory view, it might have seemed that Jackson was slighting Washington's acting ability. But, he wasn't! In "Out of Time" the Denzel Washington brand is in full effect. Washington's coolness, calculating and charisma jump off the screen. "Out of Time" is full of riveting, twists, intrigue and farfetched encounters. Most importantly, it's a fun movie that you never get tired of watching again and again. Why? "Out of time' has a spiraling out of control plot with beautiful cunning women and a handsome, but flawed, engaging leading man. It's the complexity of human nature gone awry. It's what happens when you mix love, friendship and greed in the same pot and wait for it to react. It's explosive. Watch "Out of Time" and see Denzel Washinton, Sanaa Lathan and Eva Mendes explode! Loved The Colors, Liked The Film April 8, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) This is one of the few Denzel Washington movies that flopped.....but I liked it. For most, it was just didn't hit a chord with moviegoers, although I'm glad to see a bunch of Amazon reviewers that liked it. For many, though, the film as a whole wasn't up to Washington's standards. Being someone attracted to good visuals, I loved the colors in this film, set in South Florida. The orange-and-greens were beautiful and I enjoyed the music, too. It all elevated the likability of this modern day film-noir for me. I have to admit at one point I began wondering "when is something violent going to happen?" However, many 1940s film noirs were like this (building up tension until the end) and I'm a fan on those old noirs. Thus, I still found this DVD pretty interesting most of the way, with a nice twist at the end, too!
