Amazon.com essential video Legendary silent film director Cecil B. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom Keogh

12 Dollers at wallmart on 3/11/2002 March 11, 2010 Elaine Wilson (Orlando, Fl.) Must be for easter & this version is of course brand new at Walmart lol. This is my favorite movie of all time, there is so much story to it, I'ed tell the story, but I'm sure everyone knows it, good luck.
Video March 4, 2010 Lucy Bayly (california) It came on time and was in perfect shape. I love the movie and the price was right.
Yes, I said a Holiday Movie February 21, 2010 R. L. MILLER (FT LAUDERDALE FL USA) No need to enumerate all the Christmas ones, but once you admit that Easter is also a holiday, you end up with a more manageable number. To me, the top two Easter flicks are the cinematic version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" (even though its top names of Barry Dennen and Josh Mostel are more stage talents, and Ted Neely as Our Savior is a marginal "who's he") and this one, which has been part of my movie viewer life since I was a kid. We went to see this one at a very very pre-IMAX drive in, and I what I thought was great at the time was Moses' protestations to God on Sinai on whether or not anyone would listen to him: "Who shall I say sent me?" God answers "I am what I am. Tell them I Am sent you." At the time, I'd been watching too much Popeye on TV and I chimed in from the back seat: "I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam."--and I promptly got swatted by my Mom. And I'm not entirely convinced that the comic aspect of Edward G Robinson as Dathan drawing on his Little Caesar role ("Now lissen, Moses") was unintentional. All in all, this one's got something for people on both sides of the Faith issue, as another customer notes here when he admits that, since he's atheist, he still loved it as a classic DeMille movie.
the dvd February 8, 2010 Jane Cooper it was every bit as great as i remembered, and the quality was good considering it is now an older film, good value as you get the silent film and bonus features
Long over due February 7, 2010 L. Salzman (Alaska) This is the 2nd best movie ever , behind Ben-Hur starring Charlton Heston, and I was able to get it at a great price.
