Amazon.com The 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre adheres to the pure and simple slasher movie formula: Introduce a gaggle of sexy young people, make vague gestures to distinguish them--Jessica Biel (Summer Catch) wants to get married and doesn't like pot, so she's our moral compass--then start hacking them to pieces one by one. The visual palette includes grimy crucified dolls, fly-specked pig carcasses, body parts floating in murky jars, a tobacco-chewing redneck sheriff, and many slender beams of sunlight cutting through dank, dusty interiors. The camera lovingly photographs Biel's tank-topped bosom and sculpted abs as she's running in terror from a bloated, chainsaw-wielding, human-skin-wearing maniac. This remake lacks the macabre comedy of the original; it's all about the nauseating sensation of waiting for something to jump out of the dark. Also featuring Eric Balfour (Six Feet Under) and R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket, Mail Call). --Bret Fetzer

A good Halloween flick. June 23, 2009 Andrew Driscoll (WI) This movie has a great Halloween atmosphere. It was a dark and somewhat beautiful film, especially the scences in and around the farm house. The acting somewhat lacks, and yes it is a remake. It is no where near a great film, but I will enjoy watching it around Halloween time.
Unnecessary five years ago and even more unnecessary now. March 29, 2009 Danny (South Philly) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the Halloween or Scream of it's generation in that it kick-started something of a revolution in the horror industry. Unfortunately, the revolution is nothing but remakes, remakes, remakes. And who says this generation has nothing original to offer? The only way this film can be construed as "raw" is if you compare it to Cinderella or the Jonas Brothers concert movie. Sure, the cast gets dirty and bloodied up, but that doesn't mask what this film truly is - another glossy, soulless flick from Hollywood's steady stream of "edgy" product waiting to be devoured by 14 year olds who think they're learning a thing or two about quality horror all because it's rated R. I acknowledge that it's a little better than I Still Know What You Did Last Summer or Valentine, but it's not really something to brag about, is it? The film boasts two bright spots for me - #1. Lee Ermey and #2. Jessica Biel's hot bod. Ermey clearly has fun as the sheriff/murderous coot and Biel gets wet a lot. Five stars. The filmmakers incorporate a lot of those sound effects that sound like the glare from a sharp blade amplified to Spinal Tap proportions. Minus one star. The film also tries to "humanize" Leatherface (whatever that means). How typical Hollywood. Minus one star. Did you know they're remaking Suspiria? Thanks, TCM! Minus one star. Two stars.
The Texas Time Travelers? December 27, 2008 Tom Ferguson (Chickamauga, GA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
How can this film's group of teenagers drive through Texas in 1973 & listen to a Lynrd Synrd song ("Sweet Home Alabama") that wasn't released until 1974? Do they travel through some sort of time warp?
This one is great November 3, 2008 Anthony Perez (usa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I dont see how people dont like this movie.it has everything a good horror movie needs.scary monsters, great pacing, good actors, blood and gore...what more could a horror fan want?and the performance by R.Lee Emery is worth watching this movie alone for.the whole movie is great as a whole.ive seen part of the original but turned it off as i found it to be somewhat boring.i hear it has very little blood and guts and i huge fan of gore.i did see TCM 2 though and i just dont like the way the old leather face was portrayed as a character...his nickname is bubba for gods sake.this one has lots of good, fear inducing moments that no horror fan should miss.deffinate buy,you WONT regret it.
Tense and Foreboding - It's the Atmosphere that Makes this Remake September 30, 2008 Sir Moneybags McBigballs the 3rd (Oxfordvilletonshireburg) This remake of TCM doesn't really add anything new to the horror genre, nor is it necessarily an improvement when compared with the original, but when viewed without any expectations it makes for a solid thriller. The formula is pretty standard: Pretty kids get shredded in creative ways by a gruesome killer. What I liked most about this film is the well crafted atmosphere of isolation and decrepitude. The environs of the forgotten little southern town where all this takes place are creepy yet believable, albeit in a "all southerners are inbred crazies" sort of way. The film contains enough gore but doesn't go over-the-top, and it's clever enough to keep leatherface at least partially concealed for the majority of the film. They also made the good call of casting Jessica Biel, who's tight fitting white tee is frequently wet. The DVD has limited extras - Some TV spots and trailers and a music video by some heavy metal band. Dolby 5.1 is available. I recommend this version if you're into horror movies and not emotionally attached to the original.
