Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com A very atypical mother-daughter relationship is at the center of Gilmore Girls, a comedy-drama that immediately set itself apart from the herd with smarter-than-smart dialogue and an endearing mix of whimsical comedy and family drama. Set in the Capra-esque burg of Stars Hollow, where everybody knows everyone and eccentrics abound, Gilmore Girls was less a mother-daughter show and more of a screwball buddy comedy in which the two buddies happened to be parent and child. Pregnant at 16, Lorelai (Lauren Graham) left her rich parents to bring up her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) on her own terms; when Rory herself turns 16, Lorelai wants to send her academically gifted daughter to the prestigious Chilton school. The catch is, Lorelai can't afford it on her own, and rather than let Rory go without, the elder Gilmore girl brokers an uneasy truce with her parents (Edward Herrmann and Kelly Bishop), who finally get a chance to bond with their granddaughter while financing her education. It sounds like a premise potentially fraught with angst and trauma, but in reality Gilmore Girls was one of the freshest, airiest, most enjoyable shows to air on the perpetually melodramatic WB network, critically praised once viewers got hooked on its unique brand of humor. Rory's growing-up adventures, including her acclimation to snooty Chilton and romance with townie dreamboat Dean (Jared Padalecki), gave the show a teen-friendly feel, but Gilmore Girls was anchored in the adult by the luminous Graham, a brilliant comedic leading lady who could turn dramatic on a dime and never break stride. The show's hallmark was its rat-a-tat, whipsmart dialogue, delivered perfectly by Graham and Bledgel, as well as a host of wacky supporting characters who would go on to become invaluable cast members. The first season allowed the show--and its lead actresses--to bloom gracefully and establish a deep, humorous rapport that lent itself perfectly to weekly travails both comedic and dramatic. --Mark Englehart

So much fun July 1, 2009 Adrienne B. (United States) This is such a unique and fun show. I've owned this set for a few years now and I never get sick of it. There's always something new and fun to bring to the table. Yes, ultimately at the core of it all, its main idea is the relationships between characters, especially the Mom and Daughter relationship(s). (Lorelai + Rory, Emily + Lorelai, even Emily + Rory) However I feel it does a great job of showing character development without it getting too stale or boring. I really love that this show is so funny. It does a great job of making me actually laugh out loud and if you're anything like me, will try to challenge themselves to figure out where most of their little comedic "references" come from. Overall I adore the first season of Gilmore Girls. The writers do a great job of making Stars Hollow become a believable, little, small town community, even including the quirky personalities to be found in said towns. They keep you interested in it from the moment the pilot begins until the moment the final episode of the series ends. About the only complaint I have is the super-fast talking each character has to be able to speak at just so the writers can get everything in that they wanted to. Thought after a while its not hard to pick up on and you will barely notice it anymore. I guess it could actually add to part of the shows charm if you want to look at it that way. I enjoyed the special features on this dvd a lot. I feel it gives good insight into the story and characters. I especially loved finding out something interesting about the character of Luke. (Which I could tell you but wont because Im not going to ruin it for anyone.) And it gives good insights into how they were able to get the cast that they ultimately ended up with. Anyway, this is a very good show to watch. It's a great way to get one's mother/daughter to sit down for an hour and do something together. Actually, my entire family enjoys this show, not just the women. I guess there is enough humor in it to make it passable for guys to watch too.
Damaged Product June 14, 2009 Gigi 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was very disappointed to see that after opening the package all of the disks were scratched. Some were even scratched so badly they would not even play. The product was not packaged or protected well for shipping causing the disks to move around and become scratched.
Gilmore Girls season 1 May 9, 2009 Judith A. Florczak (cheektowaga, NY) It was a gift for my daughter. She loved it!! She enjoyed watching the first season, which she never saw.
no disc one April 27, 2009 E. Freeman (Mississippi) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recieved the dvds in great time, BUT there were two disc 2s and no disc 1...so I was pretty disappointed. You can't really start off a series with "previously on Gilmore Girls".
Something's missing... March 30, 2009 G. Wayne Cochran 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great show, and if based solely on that, I would have given this five stars. However, I came across a problem that another person that posted a review complained about. I have had to return my copy of this season because Disk 1 was missing. It had a disk labeled disk 1, but when I played it, it was episodes 5, 6, 7 and 8, which are the episodes that are on Disk 2. Just to be on the safe side, I checked every disk in the other three seasons I ordered, and those were just fine. Of course, now I can't watch any of those until I get my replacement season one set.
