Amazon.com Bernard Slade's smart, funny, and touching play about an adulterous couple who meet one weekend a year for 26 years is nicely adapted for the screen by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) in this 1978 film. The two-person story stars Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, both of whom are outstanding at conveying a rainbow of emotions over a quarter-century as life gives and takes away, and the world convulses with change. Mulligan brings taste and honesty to the film, and Alda and Burstyn give full, living performances. --Tom Keogh

Same Time, Next Year - Very Funny Movie! April 13, 2009 Joan C. Cooper 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw the movie, "Same Time, Next Year" several times before finally purchasing it on DVD a few years ago. I absolutely loved the movie. Alan Alda was so hilarious. Both Alan Alda's and Ellen Burstyn's performances were superb. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves to laugh and wants to leave a movie with a light hearted and uplifted feeling. "In 26 years, I've never been out of love with you." March 23, 2009 D. Munro (PA, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I, for one, was a skeptic. I loved Alan Alda as Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H and was hesitant to see him in anything else. After viewing it just once, this has become one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. Alda plays George, a happily married accountant with kids. He meets Doris (Ellen Burstyn), a happily married homemaker, at a California inn in 1951. Neither one is the straying kind. They eat dinner at separate tables and, somehow, look up at the right moment and catch the other's eye. It is, for them, an immediate attraction that they easily give into. Afterward, both feel guilty about the adultery ... though neither truly regrets what happened. It is in this first interlude that they start a tradition -- they share one good thing and one bad thing about their spouses. It is a great ice-breaker. We see these two at different points in their lives as they continue the affair each year -- same time, same place. We see them experience angst, joy, and grief together. They come alive with each other, soothe each other, and balance each other. George and Doris love their spouses, but have a deep and abiding love for each other. As the years go by, they age ... but their love grows with them. In 1977, George arrives at their meeting place with news, and an important question that Doris has waited decades for. I couldn't help but root for them -- the acting is that good. Kudos to Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn for a great romantic comedy!
A movie to watch over and over March 8, 2009 William H. Potter Jr. (roanoke,va) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this movie. It's one of my favorites and I can watch it over and over again!
Great actors, worth watching December 16, 2008 Cat (Southern California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie is charming for two reasons: Alda & Burstyn. Both are exceptional actors and I appreciate that we get to see the change in them throughout the course of their affair. The story is interesting and not in the least bit apologetic and it goes beyond the typical "will my wife/husband find out?" sort of dialogue. I find that I'm just appreciating these two people having arguments and debates and sharing bits about their families. This film is also interesting because it's basically a dialogue movie but it manages to keep our interest. Sometimes the dialogue or the action was a bit jarring, almost unnatural, you can tell it was borrowed from the play in which case it should've been toned down for the film. I really didn't appreciate the music, either-it was rather dated (and not in a good way). I know this movie is pegged as a "romantic comedy," but it struck me as more of a serio-comedy than a romantic one. To me, romantic comedies are like "When Harry Met Sally." Regardless of it's faults, it's worth watching for the fabulous acting.
