| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential video In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

Good Movie March 19, 2010 Stan C (Independenc, MO) Originally had this on VHS so I bought the DVD. One of my favorite movies.
Terrible Service March 5, 2010 Judith Curtis (Wa USA) This movie was supposed to be received by the 24th? I still haven't gotten it. I'll never use this vendor again. And I want to go on record as having reviewed her/him and they're terrible!!! Worst experience I've had ordering through Amazon.
where is it? February 25, 2010 Grace 2004 (MA) ordered this and others on Feb 5th, now Feb 25th, where are they? This is ridiculous. Very late now for b-day presents.....ahhhhhhhh
War of the Worlds, get a clue! February 25, 2010 iluvadeal (Knoxville, TN USA) Not a typical sci-fi flick. This one has great characters that I love to watch over and over. Okay, the world is nearly destroyed by aliens. But, add a mix of a great cast and a great story, and you have a great movie.
United We Stand February 12, 2010 pocharcco949 (San Francisco, CA USA) The first time I watched this movie was back in 1997-1998. My first thought was, "wow what a good movie!" All the explosion and the excitement makes this movie even more captivating. Will Smith did o.k. in this movie however I feel there was a lack of acting/ effort put out from this man. There was a lot of potentials. A quarter through the movie was interesting because viewers wonder what the humans will do to save themselves from alien destruction. From half way to the end of the movie, it was mostly humans vs. aliens, good vs. bad. All the major countries come together as allies to fight terror from out of space. It gave you a nice feeling of patriotism, not for one's country but for mankind. I wouldn't say this is the best Will Smith film, but it's a fun film to check out.
