this romance and comedy and the happines of pursuit rate a 10 when dudley moore plays a hormonally driven vacationer on the trail of young beauty(bo derek). and the romance is part of the aventure when derek is the jungle beauty of TARZAN THE APE MAN.highlights include the ape man freeing jane from a python's squeeze and rescuing her from kidnapping primitives who've covered her with white body paint.

5 out of 5 stars Bo Derek was Fantastic   February 14, 2009

Despite what other people have said or written I thought this picture was great. This picture hit movie theaters across the country on August 7 1981 starring the gorgeous Bo Derek as Jane Parker, Richard Harris as James Parker and Miles O'Keefe as Tarzan the ape man. This movie is about Jane Parker whose father left her when she was one year old. Jane travels to Africa to see her father James Parker who's in Africa for an expedition. When she gets to her fathers camp she's welcome with somewhat open hands. I thought the father started to feel guilty when he saw Jane for the first time. When James Parker starts out on his expedition Jane tells him she going with him and he said no. So know Jane and her father along with Mr. Holt whose James Parker right hand man set of thru the jungles of Africa. On the first night of the expedition Jane here's a loud hollering noise that echoes through out the jungle. While walking through the jungle one of James Parkers women comes up missing and James thinks its Tarzan but is it? Here are some questions that need to be answered? Who's kidnapping James Parkers workers as they disappear one after another one? What does Tarzan had to do with this? What happens when Jane and Tarzan meet? Finally does James Parker get to where he wants to go? Here are some of my own thoughts about this movie. I didn't like Richard Harris in this movie at all. He character was over bearing and he did a lot of yelling which made no sense to me. I also didn't care for the way he treated his daughter when she first got there. I thought Mike O'Keefe was great as Tarzan. He plays the part of not understanding things very well. I thought the filming in Seychelles was great especially the shots of the sea and through out the jungle. However I bought this movie because of Bo Derek and I wasn't disappointed at all. Not only was she just simply gorgeous in the movie, she played the role of the James Parker's daughter very well. The scene where she's swimming in the water was fantastic. When she's comes out of the water you can *** **********. Because of Bo Derek alone I give this movie 10 weasel stars. This movie runs for 107 minutes and kids make sure you have your parent's permission before watching this.

    1 out of 5 stars derek's tarzan review   November 16, 2008

It is a very boring movie, in spite of bo derek, this movie do not catch all audiences interest and it shows a tarzan without intelligence.

    other versions are better.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies I have ever seen   April 2, 2008

    I haven't seen this film since 1981, here's a little of what I remember:
Poorly written script highlighted by perhaps the most boring monologue ever given by a decent actor (Richard Harris).
Poorly choreographed fight scenes (Tarzan vs big snake, Tarzan vs native).
Poor cinematography & editing: e.g. An excruciatingly long shot up a cliff. Bizarre and blurry camera work during a otherwise lame snake wrestling scene.

I agree with the poster who said that this film is probably worth seeing just because it is so laughably bad.

3 out of 5 stars Has to be seen to be believed.   December 23, 2007

John Derek's "Tarzan the Ape Man" is a strange movie. In Maltin's Movie Guide, Leonard Maltin says he almost felt he needed to devise a rating below "BOMB", his lowest rating, in order to rade "Tarzan the Ape Man".

So, is it really that bad? Not really. Is it good? Not really. Is it worth watching? Definitely.

First of all, the movie is not so much about Tarzan as about Jane, and her relationship with her estranged father, explorer James Parker. Great actor Richard Harris plays James Parker and Harris gives us some of the most hilarious overacting you'll likely to see in a long time. The drama part of the story, the relationship between Parker and Jane, is laughable, because the dialoge is so silly and because of Harris's absurd acting. Other examples of Harris's overacting is when, at night, they hear Tarzan yell in the distance, and Parker screams "Oh, shut up, you bo-oring sonuvabitch!"

Jane joins her father's expedition and before long, Jane meets Tarzan, when he saves her from a lion while she's taking a bath (one of several bathing scenes whose main purpose is to show Bo Derek with no clothes.

After a while Jane meets Tarzan again, after he saves her from a snake. He fights the snake in what may be one of the worst "action" scenes ever filmed, in slow motion and double exposure, so we don't see what happened. Anyway, Tarzan gets injured and Jane tries to nurse him back to consciousness with the help from an elephant and some chimps, while saying things like, "I've never touched a man before, but I like it. I like it very much". Later, Tarzan wakes up and she continues talking to him, even though he obviously doesn't understand English. For some reason she says "Do you know you're more beautiful than any girl I know?"

Later, when Jane is reunited with her father and his troupe, they're abducted by some strange natives who strip Jane naked and start painting her white. Jane asks her father to tell her a story so she can think of something else while this is going on and he starts spouting something like "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.... All the kings horses and all the kings men...." It's extremely absurd and has to be seen to be believed.

So, the movie is fun, although it could have been slightly shorter for better pace, but it definitely deserves to be a cult turkey. And those who want to see Bo naked won't be disappointed. But whatever everyone else says, I do think she's also a quite decent actress. Miles O'Keeffe plays Tarzan, he doesn't have much to do, but he's sure nice to look at.

Recommended for fans of Bo and fans of strange, funny "bad" movies.
