Amazon.com Based on a novel by James Michener, Sayonara earned a fistful of Oscar® nominations (including Best Picture, Director, and Actor) in 1957 and wound up winning statuettes for supporting actors Red Buttons and Miyoshi Umeki. Marlon Brando plays a Korean War fighter pilot, the son of a general, reassigned to Japan, where fraternization with local women is taboo. After breaking off his engagement to another general's daughter, he finds himself falling for a Japanese entertainer (Miiko Taka), then struggling with his own bias. Subplots deal with other servicemen (played by Buttons and James Garner) who also fall for Japanese women. Directed by Joshua Logan from a script by Paul Osborn, the film takes a then-daring look at prejudice as well as post-war racial bias against the Japanese. Brando's Southern accent makes him sound like Matthew McConaughey, while Buttons is actually touching as tough, tender American struggling against racism. --Marshall Fine

Great Movie! October 22, 2009 Ryan Nakafuji (Gardena, CA USA) "Sayonara" is a great movie! The story is compelling, emotional & impactful. It also has themes that will make one think. The movie touched my heart.
I had not heard of "Sayonara" before I "came across it" on cable television. Therefore, I assume that it is a movie that has been "flying under the radar." It has all of the qualities of a classic, such as "Rocky" & "Star Wars." However, for "Sayonara" to be considered on the same level as other classics, then people have to "get the word out."
Marlon Brando & Miiko Taka are superb as the two main characters. Red Buttons, Miyoshi Umeki, Patricia Owens & Ricardo Montalban are wonderful in their supporting roles. James Garner ("The Great Escape" & "The Rockford Files") is one of my favorite actors & he complements Marlon Brando very well in a supporting role. I highly recommend "Sayonara!"
Incredible movie, unforgivable DVD! October 9, 2009 Nuke Quazar The one star is to bring attention to the DVD transfer quality. This is a fantastic film! Brando is, as usual, unbelievable!! The greatest actor of all time, in my book, for sure!!!
This DVD, however, is unforgivable, an embarrassment to the studio, the movie, and to home video itself. It is 16:9 letterboxed onto 4:3, making it tiny and grainy on a widescreen TV, and the transfer itself is washed out and dull. This is especially annoying since a good HD transfer does exist; I saw it on HDNet movies on DirecTV. That transfer is beautiful.
Come on, MGM, bring the HD transfer to Blu-ray!
great movie great copy September 13, 2009 Daniel Hall (Las vegas ,nv) I have always loved this film...atleast since i caught it on A&E about 17 years ago and have searched for it since then. It was so nice to find it here and the copy is really nice with scene selection and great color. If you love Brando you'll love this film.

This is a wonderful older film, Marlon Brando is stationed in Japan and falls in love with a Japanese woman. Very well acted...teary scenes, but very enjoyable.
