"Life is very strange, but I like it!" October 5, 2007 Penumbra (Atlanta, GA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Samy Goldstein is a frustrated novelist working as a scriptwriter on a Buenos Aires television comedy. The show isn't going well. The host hates the material...and the writer. The producer, though less outspoken, points out that they are dropping in the ratings. His personal life isn't any better. He supports his mother, his divorced sister, and his nephew. His mother nags him constantly. His sister, an unemployed psychologist, points out all of his neurosis. His fiancee, a recently published novelist herself, is so bored with him she finally demands that he return the key to her apartment. He patiently points out that she never gave him the key. One night, as this sad sack is walking home, he is accosted by a beautiful, flamboyant and, somewhat violent, young woman who has him confused with her Daddy's analyst. Once the case of mistaken identity is resolved, Mary becomes intrigued by Samy. She pulls some strings and gets a job as an assistant at the television studio where he works. Before you know it, she has arranged a pilot episode of the "Samy Goldstein Show." All he has to do is be himself and present his own material. Although he is nervous, frightened, and reluctant to go though with it, he finds himself pushed onto the stage in front of live audience. No one is more surprised than Samy when the show becomes the biggest hit on television! Suddenly anxiety and neurosis becomes the rage, and Samy's face is on billboards and magazine covers. Inevitably, a romance blossoms between the unlikely television star, and the only person who has ever believed in him. But can any of it last? As always, it's a pleasure to watch Ricardo Darin perform. Argentina has established a fine tradition of producing fabulous films, and Darin is one of the brightest stars to emerge. "Samy y Yo" is a light comedy that doesn't demand too much of his considerable talent, but he has a nice touch with comedy and is very natural and engaging as the hapless hero. Do yourself a favor and check out some of his other memorable performances, including "Nine Queens," "Son of the Bride," "Luna de Avellaneda," and "The Education of Fairies." The DVD looks and sounds beautiful. The package includes extras such as a printed synopsis, filmographies of the director and stars, a theatrical trailer, "making of" feature, and a TV trailer. In Spanish with English subtitles. If you're looking for an entertaining comedy, this one comes highly recommended.
Extraordinaria pelicula January 7, 2006 Mago (Colombia) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Totalmente recomendable!
