Amazon.com Director William Wellman (The Big Heat) offered up this 1949 treatment of the Battle of the Bulge, which won Oscars for best screenplay and best cinematography. The film concentrates on the camaraderie and the divisions between the troops as they ready for the big offensive. Told in a taut narrative, the men of the 101st, led by Van Johnson, wait out the winter in the Ardennes forest to confront the German army in what would be the last major offensive of World War II. The men are demoralized and trapped, with no hope of support from the Allies as they are forced to band together and defend their position. A classically assembled war drama that nevertheless manages to be both engrossing and entertaining, Battleground is a mainstay of the genre. --Robert Lane

A film that lived close to reality July 5, 2009 Roger C. Dart (Deerfield, IL USA) Battleground A film of tribute to those who fought the famed "Battle of the Bulge" in Belgium. Filmed during the very late 1940s, some of the scenery lacks the hard-nosed realism of that the characters exhibit. It also brought together an amazing group of actors, some in their debut performances. Many of them went on to Oscar-winning careers, and countless films that entertained us for a generation or more.
It only gets better May 24, 2009 The Purple Heart (USA) I have seen this movie MANY times over the years of my life and I just appreciate it more and more. The star studded cast is too long to mention but is a plus in aiding a storyline worth only 4 stars. If you read your history books then you know this movie is based on the 'Battle of the Bulge' in WWII France. Keeping my reviews pragmatic, as usual, I will say that it is truly amazing how humorous scenes are blended into what is really a horrific wartime situation for the American G.I. With death and destruction all around them the American soldiers manage to maintain some sensibilty and step up to face each and every enemy encounter. This is even a good movie that the whole family can watch and get something out of. Time well spent. Buy it. Enjoy it. I did.
Battleground. "A see again movie" April 27, 2009 Frayne Castellanos (van nuys,Ca. USA) Battleground is a very unique W.W.II movie. It shows the suffering and determination of the men of the 101st Airborne division. Surrounded by the enemy. Totally cut off. See how they survive. It' U.S.A. all the way! the Characters in this movie are unforgettable. Each, their own definite personality. Hardy and tough. Then showing both compassion and lightheartedness to downright funny to brave their anxiety in the dilemma they were hoisted to. Great acting. great casting! It is truly a must see movie.
Defending Bastogne! March 28, 2009 Maximiliano F Yofre (Buenos Aires, Argentina) I'm a fan of WWII films and in these last days I was able to see & enjoy some gems of the genre that I've been searching for a long time. "Battleground" (1949) is a great World War II movie, directed by William Wellman, who is also responsible of such great movies as "A Star is Born" (1937) winning an Oscar as writer and was nominated for best director; "Beau Geste" (1939) and "The Ox-Bow Incident" (1943). IMHO "Battleground" is his best movie. The present film, represents a new approach to war movies, stark reality is shown, almost as realistic as in "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) or "Band of Brothers" (2001), with less gory but equal drama. The story is about a Company of the famous "Screaming Eagles" marched to fill a gap in the front pending the last German intent at the western front. They end at Bastogne surrounded by German troops in the hardest winter in years & without aerial support. Heroic yet every-day man the troops resist whatever the enemy throw them, starting a legend of endurance and sacrifice. Playacting is really good with Van Johnson as Holley, George Murphy as Pop Stazak, Ricardo Montalban as Roderigues and Denise Darcel as Denise. B&W photography in charge of Oscar winner Paul Vogel enhances the film by accentuating the desolate winter landscape and music composed by Lennie Hayton is top notch. Another high-point of the film is the excellent script done by Robert Pirosh. It is a very commendable movie for all those interested in war films. Reviewed by Max Yofre.
