Product Description A YOUNG MAN STRUGGLING TO ACCESS SUBLIMINAL CHILDHOOD MEMORIES FINDS A TECHNIQUE THAT ALLOWS HIM TO TRAVEL BACK TO THE PAST. OCCUPYING HIS CHILDHOOD BODY, HE'S ABLE TO CHANGE HISTORY. BUT EVERY CHAGE HE MAKES HAS UNEXPECTED CONSEQUENCES.
Amazon.com Despite box-office dominance during its opening weekend, The Butterfly Effect is better suited to guilty-pleasure viewing at home. When writer-directors Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber (who penned Final Destination 2) aren't breaking their own haphazard rules of logic, they're filling this sordid thriller with enough unpleasantness to make eternal damnation seem like an attractive alternative. In a role-reversal from his That '70s Show persona, Ashton Kutcher plays a college-age psychology student who discovers, by re-reading his childhood journals, that he can revisit his past and alter traumatic events, hoping to improve their previously unfortunate outcomes. Instead, this foolhardy experiment in chaos theory (the titular "butterfly effect," popularized by Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park) results in a variety of nightmarish permutations, each having dire consequences for him and/or his friends. This intriguing premise is explored with a few interesting twists and turns, but with subplots involving child pornography, animal cruelty, and profanely violent children, it's a stretch to call it entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

"One Of My Favorite Films Ever" May 29, 2009 Terry Richard (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada) Ashton Kutcher proved that he could carry an entire film on his own with "The Butterfly Effect". Up until the release of this movie Ashton was simply typecast as a TV personality, but after the release of "Butterfly" he became a leading man and a huge Hollywood star. Ashton plays a young man who had a very troubled childhood. He discovers that now, in the present, he has the power to actually go back in time and alter and change his past, sometimes with results not of his own doing. This is a compelling story and unlike anything Hollywood has ever done. The script and performances are flawless. Amy Smart, who plays Ashton's girlfriend, is excellent, and plays a woman who was sexually abused by her father, and who grows up to be a drug-addicted prostitute. This particular DVD has two versions: the director's cut and the theatrical one. There are a slew of bonuses including the filmaker's commentary, documentaries on the movie called "The Creative Process" and "Visual Effects", a storyboard gallery, and theatrical trailer. Paul Fischer of "Dark Horizons" says, ""The Butterfly Effect" is an engrossing, unpredictable and original film, more chilling and compelling the "The Sixth Sense"". This DVD is a dual-layered disc with one side featuring the director's cut and the other the theatrical version. There is also a small booklet that accompanies the set that features the movie chapters. There are two sequels to "The Butterfly Effect", but neither comes near to the originality and perfection of this one. Save your money and buy "The Butterfly Effect". It is unlike any movie you have seen.
Good-- even though a misunderstanding of Chaos Theory. May 18, 2009 Lemas Mitchell (Kunming, Yunnan China) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Short Attention Span Summary: 1. The movie opens with Ashton Kutcher as a child. At early points, he is molested by a friend's father and later he is shown doing mischevious things with friends (the exact nature of which does not become clear until later in the movie). 2. Eventually, he finds that he has some type of power to think about things and go back in time to change them. 3. Changing things leads to several different outcomes-- all of which are unsatisfactory (for him, but amusing for us). 4. Eventually, he decides that the only way to do things is to commit suicide (which he does in the womb). The idea of this movie is not strictly Chaos Theory (which is misstated in the very beginning of the movie), and which correctly is: "Small changes in initial conditions can have large changes in the final result." This movie was more strictly making a cinematic version of Milan Kundera's "The Joke" or "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (=there is no reason that It Must Be....It Could Very Well Have Been Otherwise). That all said: There were some funny parts in the film (1), and the character acting made it all work very well. Children actors are normally a "vacuum that nature has every right to abhor." But even these children were very good and the characters in one state were so believable that it was all the more interesting that they could be equally believable when portrayed in such radically opposite ways. This movie is worth an evening movie ticket price.
Amazing and Shocking Movie April 21, 2009 Andrius Povilavicius (Lithuania) The Butterfly Effect was a thrilling, dramatic and shocking movie. Evan's struggle to change his present and his past was depicted very well. And the culmination of that - in the Director's Cut (tragic) ending, at the very least - was perfect. I can honestly say that Butterfly Effect still remains to this day one of my favorite movies of all time.
The best movie one can make January 23, 2009 Mary Adams (Sterling, VA) I have a nurlogical disorder and after buying this movie I have to say for once in my life I can actually deal with they fact that I am different. Ashton gave people like me the message that when times get rough to just hang on that it's ok. I think it was so very sweet of him to make this movie and I sincerely believe he made this movie tring to change the lives of others. He is really a cool guy! I rate this movie the highest I possibly can, and highly recammend it....it was a big life changer for me...I love him to death he is the reason I am able to finally for one in my life deal with the fact that I am different. If your looking for a good movie this is it! :)
Pretty good December 16, 2008 Stephen J. Crescenzi (Trenton, NJ, USA) I watched this movie not thinking much of Kutcher's acting ability. I was pleasantly surprised.
