Brittany Murphy uses her ditzy/sexy combination to maximum effect in Uptown Girls. Molly Gunn (Murphy) is an heiress living off the estate of her dead rock star father--until an unscrupulous accountant embezzles everything and Molly has to get a job. After a failed attempt at retail work, Molly finds herself as the nanny for a prematurely humorless and rigid little girl named Ray (Dakota Fanning, I Am Sam), whose music mogul mother Roma (Heather Locklear) hardly ever sees her. Meanwhile, Molly woos an English musician who's trying to get a record contract from Roma. Unsurprisingly, Ray teaches Molly to take some responsibility for herself, while Molly gives Ray the opportunity to become the child she is--but despite the formulaic quality of the story, the two actresses play off each other well, and something unexpectedly touching emerges. Also featuring Marley Shelton (Sugar & Spice). --Bret Fetzer

2 out of 5 stars Gagtown Movie   October 25, 2008
The problem with films like this is that the directors and writers don't trust the skills of their actors. They're calling Murphy the next Lucy but they force her into contrived situations that scream insincerity! Dakota is one of the most gifted and natural actors working today but here they spoon feed "precocious" lines into her that even she must have choked on for a paycheck. Watch any mature film of hers next to this one and you'll probably gag yourself.

Unless you thrive on insipid fluff and happy pap, I'd stay clear of this one for sure.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable movie   September 30, 2008
I have seen about half this movie and was very curious to see the rest of it and found it on sale. So I bought it. The rest of the movie was just as good. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Uptown Girls   June 13, 2007
Uptown Girls Metro Golden Mayer Trade Mark, 2003, 92 minutes, price variesStory by: Allison Jacobs

One night, Molly gets dressed up for her twenty-second birthday party. A bunch of people were there, except for Molly's parents, for they died when she was a little girl. Molly used to be rich, but was now poor, so then one morning she came to find that she had been kicked out of her apartment due to not fully paying her bills. For money, she gets a job as a nanny, and is now responsible for a nine year old brat, Ray. Molly is now living with Ing, her mature best friend. However, she is forced out of the house when they get into a fight. So, Molly moves in with another best friend, a dark skin man named Huey, (he is a choreographer). Finally deciding that she cannot depend on others for a living, Molly sells a guitar collection, the only memory of her parents, (her father was a famous singer), and then buys a tiny apartment with the money.

Molly continues to deal with Ray, who is mature and neat but can still be a disrespectful brat. However, through many miserable days, they help each other through times of sadness, sickness, and even happiness. A hard time is when Ray's dad dies. Ray then becomes mad at Molly because Molly promised Ray that her dad would come out of his coma and not die if Ray talked to him and loved him. So, when Ray's dad died the next day, Ray's mom announces, "Molly, we have decided to let you go," Molly was sad, she had lost her new best friend! However, she got her back by coming to Ray's ballet recital. In the end, Molly finds many new friends to depend on in times of trouble, and even though she and Molly are thirteen years apart, they will be like sisters, together forever.

My opinion of this movie is that it is "two thumbs up!" There are many reasons to prove this! One is because I can always somehow feel or relate to the main characters. Also, this movie has a great atmosphere, and the writer of this movie definitely kept in mind the famous saying of "no tears for the writer, no tears for the reader", or in this case, watcher! Lastly, a reason why I like the movie "Uptown Girls" is because it has a unique plot, setting, and characters.

"Uptown Girls" is a great movie for movie nights! I recommend it to mature ten year olds, (no younger than ten because I first watched this movie when I was ten and there were a few parts that were inappropriate), up to any age! Even adults will love this movie that is both mature and immature! I hope that you and some friends can watch this movie and enjoy it, just like I did!

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie!   April 6, 2007
Molly Gun is a spoiled rich girl who likes to have fun and spend her money. Ray is a rich eight-year-old girl whose mother neglects her. When Molly loses her money, she goes to work as Ray's nanny. They don't get along at first, but they both soon become good friends. Ray acts way too mature for her age, while Molly is a little immature for her. Molly teaches Ray to act like a child, while Ray gives Molly a lesson in what it takes to be a grown-up. Heather Locklear plays Ray's mother, a selfish horrible witch who doesn't care or understand her daughter. She gives her gifts so she doesn't have to spend time with her. When Ray really needs someone to help her, she instead turns to Molly. It's a funny, cute movie and some parts of it even made me cry like where Ray and Molly are spinning in the teacups and then Ray starts to cry and she runs into Molly's arms. Great movie with a great message.

5 out of 5 stars The spoiled princess's of Manhattan.   March 30, 2007
Uptown Girls starring Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning is quite delightful about a rich girl (Murphy) who loses her inheritance and must become one of the normal people - she has to get a real job (gasp!). Donald Faison and Heather Locklear also star. Fanning has never been more than a pain in the rump for this particular role but she is one of the most talented young actress' since Jodie Foster. Murphy has great range as an actress, every role she commits to, she delivers a clean, enerergtic performance as always. The ending is so cute that it's embarrassing. This movie works so well, it's predictable, melodramatic, and formulatic but I defintely enjoyed this feel-good comedy from two gifted actress'.
