PI + Sexy Ghost(?) = Hot time in the City May 17, 2009 Don L'Amor (Dallas, TX USA) Cash-strapped private detective Tommy Lee Jones is hired by a client who claims he is being haunted by the ghost of his dead wife (Virginia Madsen). Which will he choose--solving the mystery or getting the girl? Some torrid romance and engaging plot twists make this flick a fun ride. A surprise scene with a homeless guy is one of my all time favorites; this scene alone is worth the price of a ticket. R with some nudity. Tommy Lee always delivers and Virginia Madsen is at her hottest. Stylish and steamy, check this one out!
Tommy Leee doesn't have a: "Ghost Of A Chance!" Or does he?? February 5, 2009 Andy Rampage! (Billings, Mt) What a: "Diamond in the rough" this little film is!! Can't Believe i actually found it @ amazon marketplace AND BRAND SPANKING NEW!!! NO film Noir fan's library IS COMPLETE without this ONE!! I won't *spoil* .. like other writers... where's The Point in seeing it then?? Its Got A young(er) Tommy Lee, Virginia Madsen playing The femme fatal & showing-Off her amazing cleavage at EVERY Opportunity!! ALL this & a "Twist" to The Usual Noir plot-line... "REMARKABLE!" "UNBELIEVEABLE!!" .. They Sure don't Make films like these anymore.. and its OUT LOSS!! But for THE PRICE I PAID YOU CAN: "GET it NOW!!" before its GONE! You don't like it i'll BUY it back from YOU and give to a/another worthy film Buff... with amazing lines like: "Beer.. mayonnaise??" as Tommy Lee has his faithful pal over to his dingy little Private EYE pad... "YOU CANNOT LOSE!" .. So WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??
I USUALLY GO FOR THIS TYPE OF FILM, BUT WHAT HAPPENED HERE? January 12, 2009 Michael W. Kuzminski (Greenfield, IN) Concidering that I really love a good noir, or neo-noir perhaps going in I was expecting too much. Although having a stylish look and feel, and the music fit the mood, I like both Tommy Lee Jones and Virginia Madsen in several other films they done, however this film just didn't do it for me. The acting was streatched to disbelief probably overcompensating for the Swiss Cheese of a plot. This was by far NO Chinatown or L.A. Confidential. Two stars is more than generous.
Was it the writer or the director? November 11, 2008 Zachary Cabon (High Point, NC USA) Actors: 5 Stars "Eddie": No actor could play the private investigator in Gotham better than Tommy Lee Jones. "Rachel": The ghost in Gotham was required to be "glamorous" and "seductive"; Virginia Madsen surpassed those requirements. If you enjoy these actors, then you'll enjoy Gotham. There was a recurring distraction for me while watching Gotham. Time and again the charms of the actors drew me in, but something kept breaking their hold over my concentration. I was unable to identify the distraction during the film, except I narrowed it down to either the writer or the director (not something an audience wants to debate while viewing a film). After the movie ended, I read the back cover on the DVD box: "Written and Directed by Lloyd Fonvielle." That narrowed down the distraction for me. The writer, Lloyd Fonvielle, offered an intriguing story-concept - to be haunted by a sexually erotic and potentially heart-breaking ghost; but all in all, his script seemed too heavily influenced by a Saturday morning cartoon - by "Casper," perhaps. The director, Lloyd Fonvielle, was ADD - filming comedy, then suspense, then a thriller, back to comedy (this may not be the exact chronology...). As a result, the director gave us a remarkably clear view of no momentum. The next time I watch Gotham (to enjoy the actors) I will supply my own imagination to improve the script and the direction.
Poor Acting, Plot with gaping holes January 6, 2008 shaggyhampster (New York City) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this DVD based on the 5 star reviews that it received here. I must say that this film was close to a complete disappointment. Tommy Lee Jones can usually be counted on to deliver his schtick in a fairly convincing way. Not this time. I offer the evidence of his performance in the regergitation scene where I have seen more convincing acting in my children's school plays. The other actors don't even merit a mention. To be fair I think the script and the directing did little to enhance the performances. perhaps the actors did the best with what they were given. On to the plot. The writers did not even seem to try to patch up the many holes in this completely illogical and contrived story. For a made for TV movie it is fine. Just don't expect much beyond what that genre typically delivers. Cheers!
