Amazon.com Tom Selleck gives a restrained yet powerful performance as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Ike: Countdown to D-Day. This made-for-cable feature focuses on the solemn, brilliant but plain-speaking Ike as he fine-tunes, over 90 days, tactical and political concerns involved with the Allies' imminent D-Day invasion of Normandy, i.e., America and Britain's long-awaited joint assault against Nazi-occupied Europe. A strong cast--James Remar as General Omar Bradley, Timothy Bottoms as Ike's assistant, Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith--anchors the film's mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Eisenhower's leadership under the shadow of many uncertainties (predicting the weather for D-Day becomes a suspenseful refrain) and pressure from conflicting egos (Montgomery, DeGaulle, Patton). Ian Mune is a delight as a wary, darkly bemused Churchill, who encourages Ike's strategy of supreme leadership and low-key diplomacy. The script by Lionel Chetwynd (DC 9/11: Time of Crisis) captures the unbearable tension of commencing the invasion--and awaiting the results. --Tom Keogh

An Outstanding Movie: perhaps the best war movie I have ever seen May 22, 2009 Hollywood Child (Israel) and I've seen many. This film gives insight into how wars are really waged, long before battle is joined, and how Ike waged it. An outstanding achievement, with many memorable scenes and outstanding dialog. One of my All-Time favorite movies. Period.
Good insight into Ike's personality April 24, 2009 Steve Ink (San Jose, California United States) This film is a true representation of General Eisenhower's personality and style of leadership as he plans and prepares to lead the Allied Forces in the largest battle in history - the invasion of Normandy.
selleck puts in a great performance March 28, 2009 Michael P. Dobey Tom Selleck really does a great job here in this movie. He lays down a emmy quality performance in this movie as General Eisenhower. The rest of cast is very good as well and that only helps the overall movie. This movie shows why without Ike the whole d-day operation might have been a disaster like the earlier Dieppe invasion was. The one fact that we don't see here is that he was having a affair with a woman during this period of his life. His wife later forgave him for this and unlike today; peoples affairs weren't front page news. That was probably one of his few faults other than chain smoking which was quited common in that era but just as destructive as today. Tom Selleck though really gives you a feel for this great commander who proved that leadership isn't just a battlefield commodity it exists on many levels. We owe Ike alot to this day and this movie really shows us why that is the case and it shows Ikes humanity as well. It proves that this is the type of leader you want at the top. You want your fierce generals on the line but they need a Ike to steer them overall and make sure that they don't waste lives needlessly. Let's hope that Selleck can grab some more meaty roles like this one in the future.
Good movie March 23, 2009 Cynthia J. Leigh (NV) I liked this movie, got a bit boring at times, Tom Selleck was great as Eisenhower, definately worth watching
Excellent historical entertainment -- Tom Selleck does a fine job as Ike February 23, 2009 Roger J. Buffington (Huntington Beach, CA United States) This is an excellent historical drama of the period shortly before D-Day, when General Eisenhower is faced with making earthshaking decisions upon which hundreds of thousands of lives, and Allied success, will depend. Selleck is a very credible General Eisenhower, and manages to capture the angst that Ike must have felt on the eve of the greatest invasion of all time. He also captures Eisenhower's essential humanity. This is an excellent drama. The supporting cast was not so good. There is a cardboard-caricature of General Patton to be gotten past, and numerous other supporting roles are similarly one-dimensional. Overall though, this is a fine presentation of a great general at work.
