Science Fiction April 11, 2009 Richard C. Idoux (APO, AE United States) This is the story of an ordinary man who dares to challange the concept of genetic perfection. This is the time of the future where genetic perfection is used to determine those people who may sire an offspring. Ethan Hawke is classed as an"In-Valid" who assumes the identity of one of the genetic elite so that he can pursue his dream of space travel with the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation. A week before he is due to blast off he becomes a prime suspect in a murder case; he falls in love with a collegue(Uma Thurman). Thus, pursued by a relentless investigator and his collegue begining to suspect his deception, he has the feeling that his dream is beginning to unravel.
Captivating August 22, 2007 Karen Franklin (El Cerrito, CA, USA) A decade later, Gattaca remains one of my favorite movies. I am prompted to write this review by this week's news about home DNA testing kits that allow people to check their genetic risk of cancer, as well as the gender of their 6-week-old fetus. Also, just last week I heard that my local airport is starting a business fast-track line that will scan travelers' irises. How prophetic Gattaca was, in predicting the widespread use of such technology and in warning of its risks. Great story, outstanding acting. I recommend it highly.
Outstanding film... future possibilities? August 24, 2005 Ashlee (NM, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Watching Gattaca will have anyone thinking about the current day and age of stem cell research and cloning. The title itself shows the intelligence of this movie. Not many would catch it, but the title is simply a word created to look like Genetic code, made up of the letters "G", "T", "A", and "C". Beyond all the scientific and ideological themes, there lies a wonderful "underdog" story in a world of streamlined genetic perfection. This is a must have for it's story, intelligence, and breathtaking appearance.
