Bigger isn't always better, but for anyone who enjoyed Pitch Black, a nominal sequel like The Chronicles of Riddick should prove adequately entertaining. Writer-director David Twohy returns with expansive sets, detailed costumes, an army of CGI effects artists, and the star he helped launch--Vin Diesel--bearing his franchise burden quite nicely as he reprises his title role. The Furian renegade Riddick has another bounty on his head, but when he escapes from his mercenary captors, he's plunged into an epic-scale war waged by the Necromongers. A fascist master race led by Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), they're determined to conquer all enemies in their quest for the Underverse, the appeal of which is largely unexplained (since Twohy is presumably reserving details for subsequent "chronicles"). With tissue-thin plotting, scant character development, and skimpy roles that waste the talents of Thandie Newton (as a Necromonger conspirator) and Judi Dench (as a wispy "Elemental" priestess), Twohy's back in the B-movie territory he started in (with The Arrival), brought to vivid life on a vast digital landscape with the conceptual allure of a lavish graphic novel. But does Riddick have leadership skills on his resume? To get an answer to that question, sci-fi fans will welcome another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Mess   June 14, 2009

I won't go into detail, but this sequel to the sleeper hit pitch black is a bit muddled because of so many characters, places, and subplots simply making it too much, but it does have it's moments(death by teacup). Hopefully the sequel will correct these issues because after that conan ending, I'm curious as to if they have anything special in store.

5 out of 5 stars Riddick Rules!   June 10, 2009
    C. A. Isbell (Chicago, IL USA)
The last dvd in the Chronicles of Riddick really kix butt! I love the graphics and the story line is the kickin' chickin'. I love the, well, won't give it away. It is very well done, exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's a sci-fi with meaning and FEELING! It rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Vin Diesel makes the movie   May 30, 2009
    Captain Tetanus (WI)
The necromonger plot is not really my cup of tea. What is my cup of tea is Vin Diesel as Riddick quietly and calmy killing a prison guard with a tea cup. I own this movie and watch it for things like that. I love the character Riddick which I can't imagine anyone playing better. He's not cocky, he's just confident. I love how he kills the prison guard sitting on his chest. So quietly and quickly, then gives a little shrug to the mercenaries. Very cool.

3 out of 5 stars THE TRUTH OF IT   March 25, 2009
    R. Arrington (Somewhere)
Does (The Chronicles of Riddick) deserve it's bad reputation or is it simply the victim of over-expectation? After the success of (Pitch Black),fans were eager for a second helping of the intergalactic fugitive,so Universal served it up.The plot is pretty straightfoward,it's been years since the events of (Pitch Black) and Riddick has spent his time running from bounty hunters. While visiting an old friend, their planet is suddenly attacked by a somewhat religious force who have been destroying worlds lately, and it's up to Riddick to stop them. The visual effects are top-notch and the script is decent enough. The acting varies, with some actors grossly overplaying their parts and a few managing to deliver some decent performances. The film tries to remain very primal in tone, however, whether the constant grunts and animal acrobatics work or not is up to you (the viewer).Obviously, this film wasn't trying to win any awards,it sought only to deliver a few summer thrills and to bring back a popular character.Though it's a decent sci-fi/action film,it's reputation has suffered from a disgruntled fanbase who couldn't accept anything less than what they had envsioned this film to be,which was (Pitch Black 2).But don't let their opinions discourage you from seeing this film,it just might blow your mind.

4 out of 5 stars Good show   February 9, 2009

Good show, but like most shows I've discovered that I don't like to watch them more than once.
