Darker than its popular comic-book predecessor Spider-Man, the $80 million extravaganza Daredevil was packaged for maximum global appeal, its juvenile plot beginning when 12-year-old Matt Murdock is accidentally blinded shortly before his father is murdered. Later an adult attorney in New York's Hell's Kitchen, Murdock (Ben Affleck) uses his remaining, superenhanced senses to battle crime as Daredevil, the masked and vengeful "man without fear," pitted against dominant criminal Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) and the psychotic Bullseye (Colin Farrell), who can turn almost anything into a deadly projectile. Daredevil is well matched with the dynamic Elektra (Jennifer Garner), but their teaming is as shallow as the movie itself, which is peppered with Marvel trivia and cameo appearances (creator Stan Lee, Clerks director and Daredevil devotee Kevin Smith) and enough computer-assisted stuntwork to give Spidey a run for his money. This is Hollywood product at its most lavishly vacuous; die-hard fans will argue its merits while its red-leathered hero swoops and zooms toward a sequel. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Daredevil 2-disc set Great Buy   February 11, 2010

Purchased this DVD so that we could watch it on our new tv. Great buy! Works perfectly!

4 out of 5 stars Daredevil *Movie DVD* Both Original And Director's Cut.   January 19, 2010
    Jose Lopez (Miami,Florida USA)
I have Both DD Dvd Movies, The Original Double disc and the Director's cut. Garner is very Beautiful and as Electra very good, While Michael Clarke Duncan did a great job as Kingpin, It would have been better had it been true to the comic book. Surprisingly Ben Affleck Did A Great Portrayal of Matt Murdoch/Daredevil. and Collin Farrell As "Bullseye" is really good too. The Director's cut is just Coolio Added as a Story which could explain alot. Both versions are good. Buy both.

4 out of 5 stars Not all devils are created equal...   January 9, 2010

Okay, bad news first... As much fun as the Daredevil character is, he isn't really a character that is suited for the silver screen. Why? Because his premise is admittedly far-fetched... even for comic books. While most people would agree that the original PG-13 version of this film wasn't all that great (Colin Ferrell probably should have changed agents after that one), the storyline is actually reasonably fitting for the characters being used/abused.

Now the good news. The rated R Director's Cut is actually a marked improvement from the theatrical release. While it still isn't fantastic by any means, it is definitely a far more enjoyable and in-depth film. Ben Affleck still can't act, Jennifer Garner is still little more than eye-candy, and Michael Clark Duncan is a much more intimidating Kingpin... but the added character development actually makes the little idiosyncrasies a little bit more fun to watch. If you are considering giving the Daredevil movie a shot, do yourself a favor and get the director's cut. If you are one of the poor unfortunates who fell in love with the PG-13 "kid gloves" version of Daredevil, I suggest a few hours of sunlight and a cold shower.

    5 out of 5 stars Daredevil   December 31, 2009

I thought it was smart, well written, well directed, and struck just the right tone for the material. Ben Affleck manages to make you believe in Matt Murdock, Jennifer Garner is both effective and stunning as Elektra. The movie focuses on the lead character and pushes almost everything else to the background. It's a great movie.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, this is terrible   December 19, 2009

This is one of the worst super hero films I've ever seen. It is definitely the second worst Marvel Comics movie so far, second only to Elektra, which is a spin-off of this movie. This is one of the worst movies I've seen in the last ten years.

So not only are they dumb enough to cast Ben Affleck in a movie, but they make him a super hero. I want someone to give me an example, excluding Good Will Hunting, of a movie which starred Affleck and didn't tank. Maybe they just thought comic book movies don't require a lot of acting, and they didn't need good actors. Guys, look at some of the best comic book movies, from Iron Man to The Dark Knight. Both of those films had strong leading actors. I don't know who thought had the idea of casting Affleck. The rest of the cast could e described as slightly better, but not by much. Jenniffer Garner portrays Elektra Nachios, the love interest/assassin. She was pretty wooden and whiny. The only scene with her that I enjoy is the scene where she is sparring with the sacks of rice. I only enjoy this scene because I like to make fun of it. She wasn't as bad in this movie as she was in her spin-off, but that's probably just `cause she had more screen time in the spin-off. Michael Clarke Duncan was just barely passable as the Kingpin, in my opinion. The small problem is that, at the risk of sounding racist, Kingpin is supposed to be white. This may not sound like a big deal, but what if they made a Batman movie and cast a black actor to play the lead role? Or what if they did the same thing with Spider-man? It just wouldn't work. Duncan's performance is passable at best. The only actor who I thought did a decent job was Colin Ferral, who played Bullseye. Now he wasn't perfect, and he wasn't a hugely memorable super villian. But he looks great compared to the rest of the cast. His demeanor, his jokes, his playfullness, they all make him at least a good villian, if not a great one.

I didn't understand what they were doing with the character Daredevil. He's not supposed to be some crazed murdering vigilante. He's supposed to be an honest super hero, someone who will not kill under any circumstances. But this movie has him going on a rampage, murdering convicts who were unjustly cleared of rape charges to beating up drunken fathers. We can't really like this protagonist when he is not much better than the bad guys. There is so much drama in this movie, and none of it really works because Ben Affleck's reaction to all of the deaths around him is so wooden. He never really changes the expression on his face much. The death of Elektra didn't mean anything to me because I the writers didn't make me care about her enough. The drama didn't work because I didn't care about the characters. Also, the action scenes in this movie are very mediocre. The punches and kicks look very fake in some scenes, and this is made worse by the fact that Affleck is just not an action hero. Jenniffer Garner's action scenes were slightly better, and she seemed to be in better shape than Affleck. Maybe that's why she kicked his butt towards the end of the movie.

To wrap up, Daredevil is a very poor attempt to try to cash in on a great super hero story. The actors are mostly terrible, and this drags the movie down. This movie is proof that just because you cast big names doesn't mean you get good actors.
