Product Description Set in China's past, before the first emperor, the film tells the story of a town magistrate who is summoned by the king of Qin to tell the story of how he defeated those who plotted to kill him. Genre: Feature Film-Action/Adventure Rating: PG13 Release Date: 2-AUG-2005 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com Director Zhang Yimou brings the sumptuous visual style of his previous films (Raise the Red Lantern, Shanghai Triad) to the high-kicking kung fu genre. A nameless warrior (Jet Li, Romeo Must Die, Once Upon a Time in China) arrives at an emperor's palace with three weapons, each belonging to a famous assassin who had sworn to kill the emperor. As the nameless man spins out his story--and the emperor presents his own interpretation of what might really have happened--each episode is drenched in red, blue, white or another dominant color. Hero combines sweeping cinematography and superb performances from the cream of the Hong Kong cinema (Maggie Cheung, Irma Vep, Comrades: Almost a Love Story; Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, In the Mood for Love, Hard Boiled; and Zhang Ziyi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). The result is stunning, a dazzling action movie with an emotional richness that deepens with every step. --Bret Fetzer

One of the Very Best June 4, 2009 Janice L. Jones 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just love the Chinese martial arts movies. "Hero", along with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "House of Hidden Daggers" are excellent representatives of this genre. However, in addition to the martial arts beauty of these movies, is the cinematography - the use of colors and whole-screen visuals is superb!
A Waste Of 99 Minutes Of Life. March 3, 2009 Roberto Vitale (Orlando, FL USA) 2 out of 12 found this review helpful
Scenario and showmanship are good and entertaining, if you can overlook that people walk on water, walls, and fly around. The storyline is schizophrenic and nonsensical. I got frustrated waiting for an end that took too long to come. SPOILER ALERT: No sequel here, everybody dies. Some several times.
It was ok February 9, 2009 C. Her (Maplewood, MN USA) 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this because I couldn't find it anywhere else at the time and didn't want to wait to see it. It was alright, nothing to write home about. In hindsight, I guess I could've waited to rent it.
The good and the bad February 8, 2009 D. Burns (Los Gatos, CA United States) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
The good: Beautiful cinematography, interesting plot, good acting. The bad: This movie is way too stylized. Too much slow motion and special effects. The fight scenes are so scripted they look like ballet, not fights. And the last time I checked, humans can't fly. If you can totally check your disbelief at the door, you might love this movie. Even though this movie has some major positives, I prefer films that are believable.
Niiiiiice kung-fu flick February 5, 2009 B. Kenyon 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great action throughout the movie, and an even better story. Jet gives one of his better performances in this one. The visuals are amazing and the fighting is in incredible. Great movie
