Amazon.com Half screwball romance, half television satire, Little Black Book follows insecure Stacy Holt (Brittany Murphy, Uptown Girls, 8 Mile), who has an idyllic relationship with a great guy named Derek (Ron Livingston, Office Space) and a job as an associate producer for a daytime talk show that fuses Jerry Springer and Ricki Lake. Then a cynical co-worker named Barb (Holly Hunter, Broadcast News) persuades Stacy to delve into Derek's Palm Pilot to learn more about his ex-girlfriends--which sends Stacy into a spiral of ever-increasing paranoid compulsion. Little Black Book takes some unexpected plot twists that some viewers will find inexplicable and others will find weirdly fascinating. The movie's split personality makes it unsuccessful as a whole but compelling in parts. Hunter steals the show, in more ways than one. Also featuring Kathy Bates, (Misery, About Schmidt) and Julianne Nicholson (Seeing Other People). --Bret Fetzer

Not Exactly What I Thought... May 27, 2009 This is a weird, up-beat little movie. It cannot be properly labeled as anything; not exactly a romantic comedy, not a drama, not horror, not fantasy, and certainly not in the "Stupid" category (unlike some *cough* Shrek 2). It's got it's own category, because it's not your typical "cute chick gets the guy." It's got a reality-check theme, and that's why it's an enjoyable movie. But it leaves so much as questions. And I felt so disappointed when it finished. But let me summarize it. Young, slightly naive, and sweet Stacy Holt is climbing the ladder happiness-wise until she finds a break in the ladder and plummets down; aka she realizes that her seemingly flawless boyfriend is a bit of a cheating, lying "ladies man" after browsing through his Palm Pilot. She gets a wild hair to learn more about this huge part of her boyfriend's life that she had been dumb to up till now, and interviews his three most recent "ex"-girlfriends; a friendly cook, a self-centered doctor, and a devilish super-model. But it all comes to a shattering end on the very show that Stacy works for with the betrayal of a friend and the breaking of her life. This is an odd movie, like I said before, because of a few things. First of all, the girl doesn't get any guys. She loses her cheating boyfriend and the sweetly ADORABLE Bean (yes, as in green bean) who she randomly bumped in to later in the movie. It's also odd because her one close friend, Barb (played magnificently by Holly Hunter, turns out to be a jerk who weaved Stacy's horrible live show where the lies are revealed together, and seemed to enjoy it. And finally, she does get the job in the end that she dreampt of for years, but when her beloved childhood idol Carly Simon randomly pops in, Stacy hugs the overwhelmed singer and wraps her leg around Carly's in the final shot, where it freezes before fading to black. I found that disturbing, excited as Stacy may have been, but maybe that's just me. So it's an interesting movie, but the part where her friend betrayed her really hurt me, and why I docked a star. I know that sounds mean, but I had grown to love her character, and when she got all obsessed about the show, it really disappointed me. And I docked another star just because, if this or, say, "The Devil Wears Prada" sat on a shelf, I'd pick the latter (Simon rules!!! XD XD XD). And I know that's strongly opinionated, but this movie, over-all, isn't satisfying. Well-done and cute to an extent, but otherwise? You should watch it, because it's worth watching Brittany weave a cute movie, but note that I did not say you should buy it. :) But in the end, it's really up to you. Have a fun afternoon!
Must have for all women! January 25, 2009 iloveaerobics (Ft. Polk, LA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First, let me say I am a Brittney Murphy fan. This movie is not Oscar winning, but super cute and holds many lessons that normal women have experience (many of us numerous times). It is a super cute movie w/ some valuable lessons and some great acting by Brittany. Love it.
Feel-Good Comedy Thru Mishap October 13, 2008 Jesse David Black (Revolution City, UFSA) Actually, as my title suggest, a feel good movie, yet, thru mishaps. Cute personalities, great acting, beautiful women, interesting enough story line, make this movie a hit. Take modern day talk-show TV (Think Jerry Springer); mix it up with young love, stir, bake, and you get the stuff life provides. A bit silly. A bit unrealistic. Still, a satisfying watch. Along life's journey, Brittany's character travels with the perfect plan in mind, hoping to make her life-long dreams come to fruition. Through a tremendous amount of self-made troubles, tears, betrayal, secrets, love and hate, comes panic-stricken ordeals and, still, without giving up hope, her life pans out, and delivers. I found this movie to be effective, and emotional. I loved the ending. Well worth the time to watch. Good date flick.
Waste of Time! September 10, 2008 C. Fabella (St. Louis, MO) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Brittany Murphy is cute and a decent actress. Unfortunately, this movie stinks! It was marketed as a romantic comedy, and it sure wasn't. If it was anything, it was a drama. Once more, Holly Hunter played her true self -- rude, crude, and cynical. To 'top' it all off, not once did Holly wear a blouse or a tank that didn't bear her belly. Finally, to add insult to injury, the last 10 minutes of the film treats us to a sermon on how life can't be scripted. Anyone over 20 already knows this. Anyone under 20 shouldn't watch this clap-trap.
