PERFECT OLD TIME GANGSTER FILM. January 27, 2010 Anthony R. Constantine (Chicago,Illinois) CAGNEY AND BOGART ...NEED I SAY MORE. TOO BAD MOVIE ACTORS NOW ADAYS CAN'T ENTERTAIN LIKE THIS.
Rocky the Gangster and Jerry the Priest December 27, 2009 Lynn Ellingwood (Webster, NY United States) Cagney is the charming gangster Rocky who returns after 3 years in prison to challenge other gangsters and political figures who may have put him there. Rocky is a charismatic figure which enthralls the neighborhood. Jerry is played by Patrick O'Brien, a priest who tries to develop character in the neighborhood children and steer them away from trouble. Jerry can't compete with Rocky's charm and seems to fight a losing battle for the hearts of his parishioners. The finale is very moving and turns the tables on the struggle of course with Rocky in full control.
angels with dirty faces December 2, 2009 Harold M. Clayton IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES SINCE I WAS A KID AND I FINALLY BOUGHT IT EXCELLENT MOVIE.
"The Public Enemy Meets Boys Town" July 24, 2009 Scott Rivers (Los Angeles, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
James Cagney knew a terrific part when he saw one, with the role of Rocky Sullivan made to order. Directed in rat-a-tat-tat fashion by Michael Curtiz, "Angels With Dirty Faces" (1938) remains the quintessential Cagney gangster movie - an energetic, expressionist fusion of Warner Bros. rowdiness and MGM moralism. Stylistically, the film matches the rhythms and emotions of Cagney's dazzling performance. "Angels With Dirty Faces" pulls out all the stops with classic portrayals by co-stars Pat O'Brien, Ann Sheridan, Humphrey Bogart and the Dead End Kids. The rough harshness of the early gangster dramas has evolved into a slick efficiency.
Cagney Heads Impressive Cast January 18, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) This film certainly has an attractive cast with three Hall-Of-Fame male actors and the very pretty Ann Sheridan. I am glad to see fellow reviewers here share the love for James Cagney, my favorite classic-era actor.
Cagney, as he was prone to do in his career, steals most of the scenes. He just dominates the screen and gets you very involved with his character, especially at the end. Pat O'Brien plays his normal somewhat-liberal and likable priest role and Humphrey Bogart is convincing as the crooked lawyer. Bogart was the bad guy in most films until he became a big star a couple years after this film.
The "Dead End Kids" are a pretty tough bunch. Seeing them play basketball is quite a sight - more like rugby than roundball. The shootout-and-chase scene near the end was well-done with some great film-noir photography and the ending of the movie is quite memorable.
Frankly, the first time I saw this I thought it was overrated but after the second viewing - and then seeing a nice transfer on this DVD - I changed my mind. It is anything but overrated.
