Product Description Movie DVD
Amazon.com The Cat Returns (2002) brings back Muta, the cranky fat cat, and Baron von Gikkingen, the elegant statue, from the feature Whisper of the Heart (1995). On her way home from school, Haru, a confused 17-year-old, prevents an elegant gray cat from being hit by a truck. She's inadvertently saved the life of Lune, Prince of the Cat Kingdom, and his royal father decides to thank her. He fills her locker with gift-wrapped mice and decides she should come to his kingdom and marry Lune. Haru seeks help from the Cat Bureau, and eventually returns to relatively normal life, with the assistance of Muta and the Baron. The Cat Returns recalls Whisper of the Heart and Takashi Nakamura's Catnapped, but it offers neither the wistful charm of the former nor the bold visual imagination of the latter. Hayao Miyazaki has been seeking young directors for Studio Ghibli for several years. After preparing the script and storyboards for Whisper, he turned the film over to Yoshifumi Kondo, who died tragically shortly after the film's release. The Cat Returns was directed by Hiroyuki Morita, who shows promise, but lacks Kondo's elegant sensibility. The DVD extras include a fulsome making-of documentary, Morita's voluminous storyboards, and mini-interviews with the vocal cast that includes Tim Curry, Cary Elwes, Peter Boyle, and Elliott Gould. (Rated G: minor scary imagery and cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

This is a cute movie June 24, 2009 Soul Mage (CA, USA) I've seen this movie before and I'm glad to add it to my DVD collection.
Very entertianing April 18, 2009 J. Bailey Another wonderful animated piece by Studio Ghibli, more for younger audiences like My Neighbor Totoro it's a nice 75 minute movie that's entertaining from start to finish. Makes a good addition to your Ghibli collection as a funny light hearted tale about a girl who learns to have confidence in herself and not let the world decide who she is going to be.
Hayao Miyazaki's fans January 18, 2009 Eric (Shizuoka, Japan) I have yet to watch the English version of this film so my review is based on the original Japanese release. It's a light and fun story of a high school girl who saves the life of a cat who ends up being the prince of Cat Kingdom. The kingdom therefore wants to shower Haru with gifts, one of the gifts is becoming the princess of the Kingdom. This is one our family's favorite Hayao Miyazaki films (behind Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service). Our three year is always asking to watch it. We did watch a few minutes of the English version just so our daughter could understand more (she's just learning Japanese) and the voices were better than most of the Disney dubbed films. However, one voice ruined it for us (the king's servant) and we switched back to Japanese. I'd recommend the Cats Return to parents of young kids or anyone that enjoys Hayao Miyazaki's films or Japanimation in general.
Too basic for me. January 2, 2009 M. Gale-ester 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Simple basic children's film which is lovely and sweet for kids but anyone older than ten I can't imagine getting too much from this. I'd go for Spirited Away and if you like that Howl's Moving Castle.
The Cat Returns November 30, 2008 Wilson T. Andrews Excellent story line and wonderful animation. Exactly what one would expect from Studio Ghibli.
