Product Description FACING ANOTHER LONELY CHRISTMAS, DREW WANTS TO REVISIT HIS CHILDHOOD HOME & RELIVE HOLIDAY MEMORIES. BUT WHEN HE GETS THERE HE FINDS ANOTHER FAMILY LIVING IN THE HOME. DREW OFFERS A NICE FINANCIAL REWARD TO THE FAMILY. BUT IS HIS CASH THE BEGINNING OF AN ANNOYING VISITOR WHO IS OVEREAGER TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS?
Amazon.com Ben Affleck is well-cast as Drew Latham, a millionaire on the verge of nervous collapse, a man with no sense of self who tries to buy the trappings of life--including the family that just happens to be living in his childhood home. He jumps around with a plastic smile on his face, trying to impose himself on the bribed household, who--even though the parents are on the verge of divorce--are still more psychologically coherent than he is. Surviving Christmas has been unfairly trashed due to anti-Affleck sentiment in the post-Gigli era; though the movie eventually succumbs to bland formula, it has some moments of bracing dark comedy and genuine empathy, mostly thanks to James Gandolfini (The Sopranos, The Mexican) and Catherine O'Hara (A Mighty Wind, Beetlejuice) as the parents--two superb actors who could breathe life into any banal script. Also featuring Christina Applegate (Anchorman, View from the Top). --Bret Fetzer

Surviving Christmas February 6, 2010 C. El (Evansville, IN) Surviving Christmas is an excellent movie to look at. I have seen the movie before. I liked it so much I decided to buy it.
Hilarious February 1, 2010 N. Stamman This movie is not very well known and I love to introduce something new and hilarious to friends that came over- AND it came quickly and in perfect condition~!
Could have been good.... December 26, 2009 Nanciejeanne (Western PA USA) The movie has decent actors, an okay premise...but it just doesn't manage to be a good movie. It is about a man who is rich (I guess, they really only skim over that part) and pays a family living in his childhood home to be HIS family over Christmas. Not sure how many days it is supposed to be (they skip that part, too) but they do these family-type things together, but the family doesn't really like it, just doing it for the money. Then a sister shows up, and the man's girlfriend at the end (I guess...we only saw her for like 20 seconds at the beginning) and they all don't get along.
To me, it just seemed like different writers came up with different scenes they thought would fit the premise, and they just strung them together until it was long enough for a movie. Tack on some happy ending...done! None of the scenes were ever led into, resolved, or even discussed again. Family goes and gets a tree, it is hard to put on the car....next scene. They go shopping, get out of the car....next scene. They must have run out of things because they start to throw in really goofy stuff, mom getting a photo shoot (what a waste of Catherine O'Hara's talent in this movie!), flying in a helicopter to go sled riding, people attending a play...just random things that really don't move the story, just fill in time. It is too bad because there were parts that were actually starting to get funny, but they just stop. You never feel you have any idea what the characters are going to say or do because you never get to know them. You just sort of watch and wonder what is going on.
I will probably watch it again...I usually give movies another chance to grow on me, but it really should have been better the first time.
I didn't know the rocky mountains were in Illinois. December 6, 2009 Double G (Chicago, Il. USA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Why don't they allow 0 stars, or even negative stars in cases like this?
This movie is so freakin' awful for so many reasons, its hard to know where to begin. Oh I know where...Ben Affleck. I'll end it there too.
Old-fashioned romantic comedy with a bit of a modern edge November 22, 2009 BRIAN A. O'DELL (Cliffside Park, New Jersey United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I liked this movie with all its screwball family comedy... maybe the plot was a bit predictable (rich girl and parents who are snobs) but I liked Ben and Christina as the new lovers pretending to be brother and sister. And James and Catherine as the battling parents could have been MY parents! (Though the only bit of a stretch was how a seemingly working-class family lived in such a great house in such a nice neighborhood! LOL). This is the second time I'm rented it at the video place and have decided it is worth purchasing to watch yearly.
