Amazon.com A spirited ensemble cast keeps things cooking in Eulogy, a black comedy about a gathering of the dysfunctional Collins family following the death of its prickly patriarch (Rip Torn). Zooey Deschanel plays granddaughter Kate, struggling to fulfill the old man's last wish that she write his eulogy. Meanwhile, her dad (Hank Azaria), a has-been actor, smokes pot in the dark and referees battles between his seamy brother Skip (Ray Romano), lesbian sister Lucy (Kelly Preston) and her lover Judy (Famke Janssen), caustic sibling Alice (Debra Winger), and suicidal mother Charlotte (Piper Laurie). Confused about her loyalties, poor Kate alternately runs to and from best friend Ryan (Jesse Bradford), who wants to become her lover, while Alice--super-critical of Lucy's sexuality--fails to keep secret her own fling with a nurse (Glenne Headly). Eulogy never quite reaches full boil, but there are many funny moments, and Deschanel, Romano, and Preston are particularly watchable. --Tom Keogh

VERY FUNNY MOVIE NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT January 16, 2010 Stephen Young (usa) Movie is very funny film about a dysfunctional family meeting for the funeral of a traveling salesman father who couldn't seem to remember their names, and was unable to remember birthdays and so forth. A family full of members who are alternately controlling, dominant, victimized and lacking confidence, and the Twins From Hell. Very funny dialogue and plot twists with some surprises about the deceased and a great cast, including Zooey Deschanel and Ray Romano. Highly recommended.
Predictable but still funny January 4, 2010 Peter Ingemi (Worcester County, Massachusetts United States) There are some movies that are just God awful, with horrible writing and plots that are so convoluted that you can't believe somebody put them to paper. Most of these movies are to be avoided. Eulogy is the exception.
The material is just as bad as I described but the PERFORMANCES. I've never seen so many actors make so much lemonade out of so many lemons. The delightful Hank Azaria shines in yet another offbeat role (I suspect he will one day be thought of as of the great character actors of his time), Ray Romano is just plan funny, Debra Winger plays a characters whose path is so predictable (re: But I'm a Cheerleader ) you can't believe the writer had the never to write it, but she pulls it off. Rip Torn and Piper Laurie shine in their small roles and Zooey Daniel holds it all together as our eyes in this picture. The only wasted character is played by Famke Janssen, her performance isn't bad but there just isn't much of anything done with her.
This was one of the wife's movies, it was clear that it was just God awful but you just couldn't help but laugh, time and time again the actors made horrible material work and a few scenes such as the revelation concerning Zooey Daniel's mother was just classic.
I don't think this one is a keeper, you might consider it a rental. In a way I can't help but think of the tag line from A Bronx Tale. Wasted Talent, so much talent on such a bad script. It this was written or plotted better it could have been a classic rather than an ok movie for a cold day.
Funereal Fun June 11, 2009 Ferdy (Georgia, USA) This movie provides a few good laughs and quite a few cringes but overall it's not bad. If you come from a large family, you know how the big reunions can be whether for a funeral or some other event. Everyone has their role to fill - bossy older sister, favorite son, black sheep, screw-up, etc. The thing is that no one is all good or all bad. If we could all just see the real person inside, maybe some of the all too familiar battles could be averted. The Collins family has to learn some of this the hard way as they gather to mourn their father who is not so dearly departed. The granddaughter is struggling to write a Eulogy and can't seem to come up with any good stories about her grandpa from the rest of the family. As each one remembers their childhood, the old wounds reopen. They are forced to reexamine their lives and their own happiness. It ends on a good note and really makes you think about the happy times you have had with your own family. It's not the funniest funeral movie I've ever seen. Death at a Funeral beats this one hands down but Eulogy isn't bad.
Absolutely amazing! Totally woth it! March 8, 2009 jaesah sixx (Midwest, USA) This has become one of my favourite movies of all time. When i first heard of this movie, I didnt think it was going to be anything great. I was completely wrong! This movie has a superb cast, very well-rounded. The movie is hilarious, especially if you like dry humor. Run, dont walk tot he nearest video store and rent it! You wont regret it!
Horrifically dumb, contrived December 31, 2008 Jenny Ink (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These rave reviews must have been written by the director's family, as this film is truly terrible. Google any standard review, and you will get the real picture.
This ensemble cast is shamelessly wasted, and they cannot hope to save this absolute wastebasket of a script, where the old "fighting siblings" and "dysfunctional family" routines are stereotyped to the bone, and the comedic lines are close to something found in a 1980s sitcom writer's room shredder.
I actually felt sorry for some of these top quality actors, but cannot for the life of me understand why most of them would ever accept such idiotic roles unless it was as a favor. It only proves how famished Hollywood must be for stories.
This film pulls out every stale joke in the book and manufactures fake tension via almost wholly unlikable characters, save for the actor dad, his daughter and the lesbian couple - and make no mistake, the gay women are there only as an easy joke target. The story is 15 years behind the times in this respect.
The dinner table scenes are grating-on-the-nerves annoying, and the writer/director would have done better to burn his script and let the actors improvise. The Debra Winger character cannot decide if she is angry and uptight, or just a taunting moron, and the brat twins are not even close to devilishly bad in a funny way, but rather one dimensional punks in a stupid way.
Famke and Zooey: hope to see you again - in work that you deserve.
