Amazon.com Jane Eyre--the mother of all gothic romances--gets abundant passion in this 11-episode BBC miniseries. Young Sian Pattenden is wonderfully willful and impetuous; viewers will immediately identify with the child Jane as she fights against ill-treatment at the home of her aunt and at boarding school. It's a shame to see her grow up into Zelah Clarke--until Clarke asserts her own quiet yet fierce spirit. The plot really starts rolling when Jane takes a position as governess at Thornfield, a handsome estate owned by the imperious and tortured Mr. Rochester (Timothy Dalton, a few years before he became James Bond). From there, this 1983 adaptation rips through the perilous highs and devastating lows of Charlotte Bronte's powerful novel, in which the courtship of these two prickly personalities gets twists and turns galore. Though the visual style is a bit pedestrian, the well-crafted script and skillful performances grow more gripping with every episode. The necessary feverishness springs from simple yet effective means, like macabre laughter floating down the halls of Thornfield. The scenes between Clarke and Dalton crackle with chemistry; Bronte fans will not be disappointed. --Bret Fetzer

Dont waste your time June 13, 2009 K. Adams (Calif) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have seen many 1800 movies, this is like a play not a movie. It dose not have dancing, partys, an all the rich stuff that go into it. Like these I have Buccaneers, The Duchess, Frenchmans's Creek, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall,Dangerous Beauty, One Night With the King, The Libertine w/ Johnny depp, Now these are real good 1800 hundred movies.
Mr. Rochester buckles my swash April 9, 2009 GigMama (New York City) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There are a zillion versions of Jane Eyre and they all fall short when compared to this one. Timothy Dalton is a swash buckling Mr. Rochester. Tall, dark and brooding. Zelah Clarke is a petite, perfect foil. I never try of this one. It's as timeless as the romance itself.

Oh my gosh! There is no emotion. I just can't believe Timothy Dalton's stiff unemotional version of a wonderful classic. Brits can be very reserved in public, but in private they can be truly loving and...emotional. This version is cold! I wasted by money.
Bronte's masterpiece brought to vivid reality March 18, 2009 C. Win (Salt Lake, UT USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Looking for a great cinematic re-telling of Charlotte Bronte's masterpiece Jane Eyre? Look no further. This 1983 performance far surpasses other versions due to its dramatic richness. The casting is superb with Zelah Clarke as Jane and Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester. A more convincing Mr. Rochester there could never be as Timothy Dalton embodies the brooding, arrogant and yet curiously playful character with tremendous emotional sincerity. Zelah Clarke portrays the innocent and passionate heroine Jane Eyre with a moving sense of reality that is sure to move the audience to her sympathy. Both actors truly represent the characters as depicted in the original novel. This DVD gives you the full mini series which gives you the option to watch all together or skip to your favorite episode. Those who love the book will love this miniseries and those who've never read the book will, after viewing this series, soon after claim it as a favorite.
The One and Only March 16, 2009 M. White (Bowling Green, OH United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For me this is the one and only Jane Eyre. All the others may be good and I can enjoy watching them, because I love the story. I just like this one the best of all. Maybe I am partial to Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke. They are great as the two leads.
