Amazon.com Sweetness that doesn't turn saccharine is hard to find these days; Finding Neverland hits the mark. Much credit is due to the actors: Johnny Depp applies his genius for sly whimsy in his portrayal of playwright J. M. Barrie, who finds inspiration for his greatest creation from four lively boys, the sons of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet, who miraculously fuses romantic yearning with common sense). Though the friendship threatens his already dwindling marriage, Barrie spends endless hours with the boys, pretending to be pirates or Indians--and gradually the elements of Peter Pan take shape in his mind. The relationship between Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies family sparks both an imagined world and a quiet rebellion against the stuffy forces of respectability, given physical form by Barrie's resentful wife (Radha Mitchell, High Art) and Sylvia's mother (Julie Christie, McCabe and Mrs. Miller). This gentle silliness could have turned to treacle, but Depp and Winslet--along with newcomer Freddie Highmore as one of the boys--keep their feet on the earth while their eyes gaze into their dreams. Also featuring a comically crusty turn from Dustin Hoffman (who appeared in another Peter Pan-themed movie, Hook) as a long-suffering theater producer. --Bret Fetzer

The Man Who Wouldn't Grow Up January 20, 2010 J. Owen (Williamsburg, VA USA) Marc Forster's "Finding Neverland" (2004) is a perfect example of why Hollywood needs a moral makeover and a realignment of its spiritual compass. The protagonist, Sir James Matthew Barrie (Johnny Depp), is played as a romantic hero, a champion of youth and childhood innocence. In reality he was an immature husband who cheated on his wife, a failed playwright, and a possible pedophile. To soothe his troubled conscience, Depp's Sir James Barrie pursues a young widow, Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet), and her four sons. As scandalous rumors begin to spread regarding Barrie's conduct, several characters, including Barrie's friends, his wife Mary Ansel (Radha Mitchell), and Sylvia's mother, Mrs. Emma du Maurier (Julie Christie), try to curb his involvement with the Llewelyn Davies family. This seems to have the only effect of driving Barrie into more frequent contact with them. The end result of Barrie's pursuit rings hollow. Instead of cherishing his wife and building his family, Barrie loses Mary to another man. Sylvia, the woman he was having an emotional affair with, ends up dying. Equally tragic, "Neverland," the symbolic essence of Barrie's vision, passion, and dreams, is never shared with his wife Mary Ansel and is only incompletely and imperfectly shared with his mistress Sylvia.
Barrie's relationship with the four boys is also heartbreaking. As a man he seems unable to give them wise counsel or to provide them with a good role model. To the boys Barrie comes off as an older playmate, but their deepest fear is that he will try to replace their recently deceased but loving father. In the film Barrie never is able to do more than get the boys to play and use their imagination, and in the end his only advice to the now orphaned children is to pretend that their mother is there. "...in fact, she is, because she's on every page of your imagination. You'll always have her there. Always. ...And you can visit her any time you like if you just go there yourself. ...By believing, ...Just believe." That Barrie ends up as the children's co-guardian is frightening. That Sir Barrie never seems to have matured is amply demonstrated by the child Peter Llewelyn Davies (Freddie Highmore) when he states in the film, "I'm not Peter Pan," then points to Barrie and exclaims, "He is." Johnny Depp's Sir James Matthew Barrie proves to indeed be this immature man who never seems to have grown up and lived in his own fantasy land.
There is nothing in this film that makes me want to recommend it.
Very moving film October 27, 2009 N. Scroggins (Dayton, Ohio USA) This is a moving film about the events of our lives shaping us and sometimes inspiring us to do some wonderful things. Triumph out of tragedy.
Enchanting and funny August 25, 2009 Andrew (MN) I bought this dvd a couple of months ago, but didn't watch it until last weekend, twice. I waited so long to watch it because I thought this movie was all computer generated graphics and star dust, a movie best experienced with one's brain running at idle. Was I wrong.
This movie is engaging, enchanting, and funny. You will laugh and cry with the characters as their lives unfold. The production is set in 1903 England and is said to be based on real events.
The movie is about the goings-on in the life of the playwriter, James Barrie when he wrote "Peter Pan". A man who is about 30 going on 13, who would rather clown-it-up at the formal dinner table with his new pre-pubescent friends than engage his socialite wife and her new social contact.
All the female costars ooze both beauty and talent. The children can act beyond their years. I'm just going to say this is a must see for everyone from 5 on up.
