"Still great." These words, spoken by Raymond (Ray Romano) to his wife, Debra (Patricia Heaton) at the poignant conclusion of the flashback episode "How They Met," help close out Everybody Loves Raymond's wonderful third season. He is referring not only to the hapless cook's lone signature dish, lemon chicken, but to their marriage as well. But he could just as well have been referring to Raymond itself. The Emmy-worthy ensemble (at this point, still losing out to the Frasier juggernaut) are discovering new dimensions to their characters, and the show's writers are mining even more precious, intimately observed character-based comedy gold from the Barones' dysfunctional family life. Several episodes this season rank among the series' best, including "How They Met" and the totally whacked "Robert's Date," in which Robert (Brad Garrett) desperately tries to fit in with his black partner and her friends. This is a pivotal season for Raymond's Eeyore-esque brother, who finally declares his independence and moves out of his parents' home and into his own apartment. This does not help his love life. In the hilarious episode "Robert Moves Back," Robert and Amy (Monica Horan) at last consummate their relationship, but are devastated when they learn they were exposed through curtainless windows to the other tenants in Robert's building ("You ruined our Bible study"). For viewers with a strong investment in these characters, there are earth-rocking time capsule moments, as in "The Visit," when Debra lashes out at her preoccupied mother that she wishes she were more involved in the family like Marie (Doris Roberts).

What elevates Raymond is that it is much more than just wisecracks and putdowns. The peerless cast deftly navigates the fine line between comedy and drama. "Frank's Tribute" concludes with a rare, touching moment between the verbally abusive Frank (Peter Boyle) and Marie in which he gently cradles her in his arms to remove cold cream from her face. At the conclusion of "Driving Frank," the road accident-prone Frank surrenders his car keys to Raymond. Not that Raymond is going soft. It's still, first, last, and foremost, funny. In the season-opener, "The Invasion," Debra gleefully gives her mother-in-law a taste of her own meddlesome medicine, but her victories against the indomitable Marie are, as ever, short-lived. Yes, after three seasons, Raymond is still great. And it would continue to become even greater in season 4. --Donald Liebenson

    5 out of 5 stars Raymond   November 13, 2009
    G. Mcsweeney (Hawaii)
My family and i really enjoy watching this series from start to finish ie season one episode 1 to season 9 last episode. Item arrived on time and in good condition. Only thing strange was the compact format of the case it was notably smaller, square and had slightly more than enough room to put the dvds in. Not a complaint just strange or different.

5 out of 5 stars This show reminds me of my family!   November 4, 2009
    D. J. Nardi (Washington, DC)
This is without a doubt one of the funniest shows on TV. Each character is so distinct and will probably remind you of somebody in your own family. Unlike most sitcoms, which seem to take really unrealistic characters and throw them into unrealistic situations, Raymond works taking a normal situation and exaggerating it to show the humor. I pull these DVDs out whenever I need a laugh. They're well worth the cost.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Stellar!!! Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle steal the show!!   December 3, 2008
    TennisFan4Life (Chicago,Illinois USA)
I'll admit, by the time I found this show, it was in it's 7th season, so it took me a while to catch up on things. Didn't take me long to see why this show was so highly talked about. My favorite episode from Season 3, without a doubt was #10 (No Fat). Because of the results from a health fair, Marie decided to put both her and Frank on a diet. Since Thanksgiving was nearby, Marie decided to change things up and cook an all healthy thanksgiving meal, instead of the good, high calorie stuff. This turned out to be a near disaster. So, Marie brings out the bird, and after Frank observed it, he said, "May I have my carving knife, please? I wanna sl** my throat!!!". I nearly fell over laughing, just listening to that line. That just goes to show that Peter Boyle was a genius, playing the character of Frank. After he was asked to try the "fake" turkey, his facial expressions drove me insane with laughter. Honestly, it was such a hysterical moment, watching thanksgiving day unravel at the Barones.

Another favorite from this season, was episode 15, where Robert decided to hang out with his cop partner, Judy, who just happened to be black, which wasn't a problem for Robert, but it seemed like a big deal to Frank and Marie, and of course, the insults started flying out. Robert tried to transform himself into being like one of Judy's friends, which blew up in his face.

This was television at it's best, and I for one enjoyed it. Go out and get this for yourself. Better yet, get it here on Amazon. It's definitely recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Who don't love Raymond?????   May 19, 2008
    Jennifer L. Partin (Norton, VA)
What can I say??? How can anyone who "loves Raymond" be disappointed with this video collection? My ONLY complaint is the pricing. Although it is well within competative pricing (or better with Amazon most times), when I get done collecting the entire series, I'll have a good sum of money in them..........still worth it though. Thumbs up from this Raymond-loving family :)
