Amazon.com essential video Like a pumpkin that transforms into a carriage, some very shrewd casting (and the charisma of Julia Roberts, in particular) morphed this story of a Hollywood whore into a Disneyfied Cinderella story--and a mainstream megahit. This is the movie that made Roberts a star; the charm of her personality helping tremendously to carry viewers over the rough spots in the script (which was originally a cynical tale about prostitution called 3000--after the amount of money Richard Gere's character pays the prostitute to stay with him for the week). Gere is the silver-haired Wall Street knight who sweeps streetwalker Roberts into a fantasy world of room service at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel and fashion boutique shopping on Rodeo Drive. The supporting cast is also appealing, including Laura San Giacomo as Roberts's hooker pal, Hector Elizondo as the hotel manager, Jason Alexander, Ralph Bellamy, and Hank Azaria. Now, is this something you want your sons and daughters to see? That's entirely up to you. --Jim Emerson

Pretty Woman May 30, 2009 William T. Davis (CO USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did not receive the item purchased. This is the response I received when I inquired about the purchase. To Whom It May Concern: I refund the cost of the dvd to over a month ago before I was out of stock. * 1 of Pretty Woman Arthur I will check my credit card for this refund, however, at this time, to the best of my knowledge I haven't seen the refund.
WHAT'S UP WITH THE COVER ART? I'M OVER IT. May 23, 2009 SunnyATL (Atlanta, GA) I know this sounds trivial, but I've perused through about 10 or 12 pages and can't find anything but people complaining about Julia's character being a hooker and deleted scenes. What about the cover art? Why'd they have to go and change that? I know it's all about marketing, but "Pretty Woman" was originally written in pink, and there were full-body shots of both characters. While this movie will always be one of my all-time favorites, I wish "the powers that be" would leave a good thing alone. Oh well, I'll hold off on buying this until they decide to put the cover back the way it was.
Wonderful! May 10, 2009 J. Toothman I first saw this movie when I was a kid. I bought because I remember watching it over and over again. I still love it today, even though it was one of first movies Roberts, and Gere were in.
A True Timeless Classic April 25, 2009 D. Thompson (Belmont, MA, USA) Pretty Woman is one of my favorite movies. The fact that the wealthy character Edward Lewis uses a "car phone" instead of a Blackberry does not make this film any less relevant to a 21st century audience. A timeless classic, it is just as poignant now as it was almost 20 years ago when it first came out. This is the film that made Julia Roberts' career. Before Pretty Woman, she was virtually unknown as an actress. Roberts was nominated for an Oscar (which I personally think she should have won) for playing the versatile ever-evolving character of Vivian Ward. The fact that Vivian starts out as a prostitute in this movie apparently throws off some reviewers who allow that one fact to prevent them from appreciating the story's innate value. The moral of Pretty Woman is: don't judge a book (or a person) by its cover. Yes, this movie is Cinderella-ish, but that is part of its charm. Richard Gere plays the rich handsome "prince" and Julia Roberts is the street girl who wants to be rescued. I'm sure feminists would criticize Pretty Woman to no end, but WHO CARES?!?! There is a reason movies like this remain so popular. If there was an Oscar for "On Screen Chemistry," Gere and Roberts would have won it. The sex scenes are incredibly romantic and very tastefully done- no excess nudity. The quality of the 15th anniversary DVD is very good. The Director's commentary is amusing. You will learn some interesting tid bits about the making of the film; however, I wish there was commentary from Roberts and Gere. The primary value of purchasing this DVD is that there are some extended scenes that don't appear in earlier versions, but many of the "deleted scenes" mentioned in the commentary are not included which was disappointing.
For anyone who loves a good love story April 24, 2009 Alice in Wonderland Edward Lewis has it all - wealth, looks, position, power - he lacks for nothing, right? But, when he gets lost on the streets of L.A., and stops to ask a prostitute for directions, he suddenly finds her thrust into his life. Quickly, though, he realizes that this vivacious and uninhibited has the missing parts of his life that he never before realized he didn't have. But, will she stay? This magical movie has been declared to be a modern Cinderella, and I think that that is a really accurate statement. Julia Roberts puts on a stellar performance as Vivian Ward, making her a lovable and sympathetic character through every scene of the movie. Richard Gere expertly combines the roles of strong/silent/got-it-together man and little-boy-lost, making him such an interesting and desirable character. I really love this movie, and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good love story. (Review of Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere)
