The Replacements manages to be both completely formulaic and yet immensely enjoyable. When a professional football players' strike happens, the owner of a fictitious team, the Washington Sentinels, commissions maverick coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) to pull together a team. McGinty selects a collection of talented oddballs--a Welsh soccer player, a sumo wrestler, a couple of professional bodyguards--with athletic pasts, figuring that if it doesn't work out as a game, it might as well be a circus. To lead the team, he finds Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves), a once-promising player who had a disastrous championship game. Naturally, despite squabbling and bickering, a roguish camaraderie develops through a mixture of racial infighting, harassment from the striking professionals, and a big bar brawl--after which they're all thrown in jail and perform the most improbable impromptu dance number ever committed to film. The mixture of cheerfully cliché plot mechanics, an engaging collection of supporting actors (including Orlando Jones, Rhys Ifans from Notting Hill, and Jon Favreau from Swingers), and sheer ridiculousness somehow combines to make The Replacements completely entertaining. Reeves is somehow turning into a pleasant leading man; he even emotes convincingly in this movie. And let's face it, Gene Hackman is quite possibly the greatest actor alive, able to speak the trashiest dialogue with fierce conviction. Plus, just to prove that the tight pants and close huddles of football are heterosexual, there are many, many shots of cheerleaders going through stripper-inspired routines. --Bret Fetzer

The hidden meaning in this strike where the rich players were fighting the rich owners
was that corporations had killed unionism?
We get the popular actor Keanu Reeves playing a "popular" scab.
Since no body won in this fight,
and everybody lost, the movie is certainly a type of double think?
Below the comedy in reality you have American sweat shops opening in the big cities
at slave wages and illegal alien workers?
Laugh at this all you want,
you are laughing at the fall of American industry.
My Dad and his brothers fought to get a fair living wage
for working men, and like the social security system
the result today is lost?

Very average sports film. Nothing real touching here. I love Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves though.
I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't rate it anything spectacular. Very forgettable.
The once scene that really stuck out to me was the one in the bar where they played Sting's Every Breath you Take before the two kiss. That was a little too deep for two people who just met each other a couple weeks ago.
Otherwise, the characters were all pretty likeable and funny, storyline was fun too.

Nobody's a bigger Keanu Reeves fan than me and this is Keanu at his best! I already owned this movie and watch it every time it's on television. I keep my niece's kids while she works on weekends and her eleven year old son plays football. I thought he might like it so we sat up late one Saturday night and watched it. He loved it too. For him, it rated right up there with "The Matrix" so I bought it for him for Christmas. He was thrilled!
Keanu Reeves plays Shane Falco, a former college football player who lost a bowl game because he froze up. When the regular football players went on stike, replacement players were brought in to finish the season. Reeves plays the quarterback and Gene Hackman is the coach. The replacement players consist of a swat team member, a convict, a former soccer player turned pub owner and a sumo wrestler, among others. Although the games are serious, there's also romance between Falco and Annabell, the head cheerleader. There are alot of really funny scenes and some great music. I ran across this movie by channel surfing one night and stopped to watch it because, believe it or not, I though Keanu Reeves was really cute but I didn't have any idea who he was. I started watching and liked the movie. It was on several times that weekend and I watched it every time. I've probably seen it about twenty times and I'll keep watching it. I highly recommend it. It's serious and light-hearted and I think it'll appeal to anyone, even those who aren't football fans.

This is a great 'feel-good' movie. It's got something in it for both guys and girls: football, bar fight, personal problems, internal struggles, and romance.
My wife and I both love this movie and watch it whenever we want to watch something light and fun; with, of course, a guy-gets-girl happy ending.

This is one of my go-to funny movies. If you love funny sports movies, it's a must-see. I'm not a huge Keanu Reeves fan, but this role suits him. Gene Hackman is awesome, as usual. There are many laugh-out-loud scenes. If you've never seen it, and it suits your taste, it will be one of your favorites for sure.
