    Product Description
A YOUNG AMISH BOY IS SOLE WITNESS TO A MURDER. POLICEMAN JOHN BOOK GOES INTO HIDING IN AMISH COUNTRY TO PROTECT HIM UNTIL THE TRIAL.

    Amazon.com essential video
When Samuel (Lukas Haas), a young Amish boy traveling with his mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis), witnesses the murder of a police officer in a public restroom, he and his mother become the temporary wards of John Book (Harrison Ford), a detective who's been assigned to solve the crime. After suspect lineups and mug-shot books yield nothing, Samuel, in the most memorable scene of the film, recognizes the murderer as a narcotics agent whose picture he sees in the precinct. Once Book realizes that the police chief is in on it, too, he whisks Samuel and Rachel back home to Amish country, where he himself goes into hiding as a plain Amish man. The juxtaposition between the life of the Amish and the violence of inner-city police corruption work surprisingly well for the story, and Kelly McGillis as the falling in love widow gives an almost perfect performance. Directed by Peter Weir, the film is extremely successful in drawing the viewer into its world and, accordingly, is immensely entertaining. The only thing that mars its polish is the one-dimensional, almost cartoonish handling of the upper-echelon police corruption--a subtler, more realistic treatment of this aspect of the story would have rendered the film near perfect. --James McGrath

    3 out of 5 stars It's Just OK   July 2, 2009
    Jenny (New York)
Personally, I was told I HAD to see this movie because it's Harrison Ford's best work. I bought it, but was very disappointed with it. It was not what I was expecting, or hoping for. It seemed like it had all the ingredients for a well-crafted, exciting story, but it just fell flat for me. (Perhaps it is because I was going in biased--expecting it to be the best thing I ever watched.) I do think Ford did an excellent job here, but I wouldn't say it's his BEST work. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it, but Witness a good choice if you find yourself stuck inside on a rainy night.

5 out of 5 stars Great insite to the Amish lifestyle   June 9, 2009

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Crime Moves Ever   June 9, 2009
    Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA)
Do you want to know how to make a successful movie? Just look at this one.

You have tremendous suspense, a top-flight popular actor as the hero, a touching romance story, plenty of action, a different kind of setting than normal, people you care about, nice photography, very moral and very immoral people, a little humor.....I mean.....this is how it's done.

I also liked the wholesome female lead Kelly McGillis (although she was the only Amish character out of character, a bit loose than what you would ever find) and who didn't think young Lukas Haas was the cutest kid they ever saw on film?

There are many memorable scenes in this movie, from the young Amish boy "Samuel" (Haas) hiding in the bathroom stall as a murder takes place; Ford slugging some goon who was making fun of the Amish; Ford and McGillis dancing in the hayloft to an old rock 'n roll tune; the Amish lifestyles and the raising of the barn; and the suspenseful ending.

All that is left is to see this on a super-sharp high-def disc. Hopefully, we'll have that offered to us soon.

5 out of 5 stars Harrison Ford collection   May 13, 2009
    Catherine Singleton (Lewiston ,Maine USA)
I have been wanting a copy of Witness, which I consider one of the best Harrison Ford films for years! This film blends the suspense of a modern murder with an exploration of what happens when Amish culture is confronted with the secular world. Boy meets girl becomes even more complicated as Harrison and the young Amish mother try to fight the growing feelings developing between them. If you have not had the pleasure of experiencing this film, I cannot recommend it too highly. You will not be disappointed in the Classic.
