5 out of 5 stars Educational and Informative Documentary   August 9, 2005

This DVD is extremely educational and informative. It features many lumanaries of the archictectural world, including Philip Johnson, Michael Graves, Robert A.M. Stern, Henry Cobb, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. The film nicely intertwines details from Soane's life and work with examples of how his his work has influenced the post-modern movement. Especially informative is the biographical aspect of the film - Soane's work was particularly influenced by his various travels and encounters with antiquity as a young man, and the film succesfully draws these elements together to give the viewer a coherent examination of Soane's life. This film would be excellent for anyone with an interest in architecture(especially post-modernism), and has a high educational value for high school and college students studying art history. It moves at a brisk pace and is never dull, which is quite a feat, considering all the information that is imparted over the course of an hour. Overall, I would highly recommend this documentary.

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating and well-made piece of architectural history   August 8, 2005

While giving a solid foundation on the history and work of Sir John Soane, this documentary almost delves deeper into the contemporary American architects he inspired: Philip Johnson, Richard Meier, Michael Graves, Henry Cobb, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown--all of whom we get to know just as well as we do Soane, as one by one each architect discusses Soane's influence on a signature building of his own design. The film stays educational in tone and is certainly only for those with an interest in contemporary, American architecture. Overall, a well-crafted and engaging film.
