Product Description Deep in Florida's darkest everglades a brilliant scientist Dr. Alec Holland (Ray Wise) and a sexy government agent Alice Cable (Adrienne Barneau) have developed a secret formula that could end world hunger and change civilisation forever. Little do they know however that their arch nemesis Arcane (Louis Jourdan) is plotting to steal the serum for his own selfish schemes. Looting the lab and kidnaping Cable Arcane douses Holland with the chemicals and leaves him for dead in the swamp. Mutated by his own formula Holland becomes "Swamp Thing"-a half plant superhero who will stop at nothing to rescue the beautiful Cable and defeat the evil Arcane...even if it costs him his life!System Requirements:Running Time: 91 Min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: HORROR Rating: PG UPC: 027616926685 Manufacturer No: 1008658
Amazon.com Horror vet Wes Craven wrote and directed this campy swamp romp adapted from the DC Comic of the same name. Adrienne Barbeau stars as cleavangelically blessed government agent Alice Cable, sent to the bayou to guard the brilliant Dr. Alec Holland. Holland is using recombinant DNA to create "a plant with an animal's aggressive power for survival." Let's hope none of that volatile secret formula gets spilled! Swamp Thing is an unusual mix of monster movie and superhero flick, but definitely an enjoyable ride. Craven deliberately uses comic-book-style wipes and transitions to keep us from taking anything too seriously, and Louis Jourdan keeps up the tone with his camp performance as the evil Arcane. Also keep an eye out for young Reggie Batts in a terrific deadpan performance as Jude, the helpful gas station attendant. --Ali Davis

slow moving thru the mud June 18, 2009 astrorev (Sacramento, CA USA) Ali Davis' Amazon review well sums up this movie except that it wasn't all that fun in my opinion. Campy, yes, funny, no. B-rated gimmicks and special affects are apropos to these kinds of films, but for a Wes Craven flick??? Maybe it's not meant to be sophisticated, but it's pretty lacking in the clever department as well. I did enjoy seeing some of these actors of a quarter century ago in their younger years of work. But I can think of other B-movies that go with a bowl of popcorn on a Friday night much better.
A Fun, Class B Flick May 1, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) This reminded me of the 1950s science-fiction/horror films with its primitive dialog, hokey action scenes and laughable makeup for the monsters. Thankfully, we have been treated to 25 years of great special-effects since this was made. However......what makes this more attractive to watch than those '50s films, are great swamp photography, Adrienne Barbeau's body and a story that moves really fast. Barbeau, as she was prone to do, appears to be only in this movie to show off her massive chest. However, it's pretty harmless fun, very tame compared to the horror movies of the past generation regarding gore and profanity. In this case, "retro" is better than "present day." Director Wes Craven would go on to make far bloodier and nasty films than this, which is pretty tame in comparison. In the end, it's a good Class B film, fun to watch and fast-moving.
A BUST December 30, 2008 PROMINENT CRITIC (New York, NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, Adrienne Barbeau has a nice set of bazooms, but that's about the only thing worth looking at in this silly nonsense that might entertain a few ten year olds. I had thought that maybe with an actor the stature of Louis Jourdan, A.B., and directed by Wes Craven, that maybe it would have at least something to recommend it. Afraid not.
An Enjoyable, Decent Little Popcorn Thriller From '82! September 9, 2008 M. B. DaVega (Columbia, SC) I still like Swamp Thing (1982). Twenty-six years later it's still fun to watch. For a movie about a botanist who gets accidentally turned into a super-strong, half-man, half-plant superhero, it is pretty cool, even if it is admittedly more than a little campy. But hey, it's based on a DC Comics series, so whaddaya expect?!!? Of course it's gonna be a little bit campy. But it also has enough plot, atomosphere and science to hold the viewer's interest. Adrienne Barbeau is great eye candy as Cable, the film's heroinne and Louis Jordan is quite a treat as the menacing, placid villain, Anton Arcane. I guess this film still strikes a chord with me because I first got see this one when I was little and also for the fact that much of the film's atomospheric swamp scenery and background was filmed right here in my own native South Carolina. (Even though in the film, it's set in the Florida Everglades) The scene where we first meet Reggie Batts's character at the run-down, backroad gas station was filmed on St. Helena Island, SC. The authentic South Carolina swamp scenery definitely added to the movie! This was an earlier offering from director Wes Craven with a decidely Friday-the-13th-like musical score from composer Harry Manfredini. While not outstanding, it still has enough thrills, chills, action, mood and decent, pre-CGI creature effects ----- as well as a large enough fan following ----- to assure it cult status. The climatic showdown in the bog at the end of the movie between Swamp Thing and the mutated, sword-wielding Arcane creature was worth the whole flick! Still worth checking out, even 26 years later.
A unique Mix of Horror and Superhero movies July 31, 2008 Dr Alec Holland (Ray Wise) and Goverment Agent Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) Are Working on a Formula that could end world hunger ! But Evil Scientist, Anton Arcane(Louis Jourdan) Tries to steal it and mutates Holland into a half man-half plant superhero Swamp Thing (Dick Durock). I found it was pretty good but the Arcane Mutant look kin'da fake but had a great script and some pretty good actor's. A Decent Comic Book Movie.
