Amazon.com Simpsons creator Matt Groening helped create this delightful animated adaptation of the popular Christmas book. Originally shown on the Fox channel in 1999, Olive deals with a upstanding dreamer of a pooch (voiced expressively by Drew Barrymore) who hears Santa's angst when Blitzen breaks a leg just before the holiday, messing up Santa's delivery schedule. Olive hears Santa's quote about "all of the other reindeer" as "Olive, the other reindeer," and she is convinced she must go to the North Pole to help. Using equal parts traditional Christmas themes (unselfishness, the importance of being good instead of naughty) and Simpsons-esque humor (wordplay, contemporary cultural references), the 45-minute short is a refreshingly fun holiday pleaser. Purists may chafe at the action pieces and a scene in a rough 'n' tumble bar, but the filmmakers keep the spirit--and the unique look--of J. Otto Seibold's and Vivian Walsh's book. With some snappy songs (including one performed by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe) and great zingers (one reindeer calls Rudolph an urban legend), it's a fine holiday time for ages 5 and older. --Doug Thomas

Olive the Other Reindeer January 18, 2010 Patricia Chiu This enjoyable holiday hit can be watched all year long, at least with my kids. Original and witty tunes make this DVD highly entertaining. Olive and sidekick Martini are adorable and funny.
Disappointing November 20, 2009 Robert (New York, NY United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Disappointing if you're expecting an animated version of of 'Olive' that's as charming as the books are.
Simpson's Christmas Special September 22, 2009 Parker Herr (San Francisco) The people who make The Simpsons put this show together with the help of Drew Barrymore. It has got to be the most funny Christmas animation out there. Olive, the main character, is sweet and helpful and determined to help Santa on Christmas Eve. So, it has that nice holiday spirit, but at the same time it will make you laugh so hard your cheeks will hurt...and get rosy. Ho ho ho!
olive the other reindeer movie- not a fan July 10, 2009 Esmeralda Lisbet Padilla 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The story Olive the Other Reindeer is very cute and is a story that my students love to hear every year in December. I bought the movie to show to my students but it is not appropriate for kids. First of all I think it says it is produced by the same people that produced The Simpsons. There is a scene called "The Bar", which says it all. Not appropriate to show elementary students.
I Love the Artwork, but It's No Rudolph March 9, 2009 vegebrarian (Omaha) I'm a big fan of J. Otto Seibold's art work. His Alice in Wonderland pop-up book is amazing and I have the Mr. Lunch address book. I purchased this dvd as a gift for my nieces - and ended up receiving a copy from my brother the same day. The kids were glued to it - but I found a little something lacking in the story. Still, if you're a Seibold fan or are looking to incorporate a new holiday film into your repertoire, I recommend this along side classics like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman and Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas.
