Amazon.com How is it possible that 11:14 went virtually unreleased in theaters? After modest film-festival exposure, it played briefly in San Francisco in August 2005 (over two years after it was completed), but that's a cruel twist of fate for such a cleverly twisted movie about cruel twists of fate. Destined for sleeper status on DVD (and given a slightly higher profile by Hilary Swank's subsequent Oscar-winning performance in Million Dollar Baby), the audacious debut of writer-director Greg Marcks boasts a fantastic cast in a smartly constructed comedy/thriller, partly inspired by Blood Simple, in which a fatal traffic accident is examined and re-examined from multiple perspectives. The flashback structure involves all of the characters and events that lead up to the accident's deadly occurrence at 11:14 on an otherwise pleasant evening in Middleton, a typical suburb of Anytown, USA (filmed in the vicinity of Los Angeles). Marcks's screenplay attracted an impressive ensemble cast (costar Swank also signed on as an executive producer), and they're all given equal time as the intertwined plots are revealed. They include Rachael Leigh Cook (whose bad-girl behavior sets the chain of events in motion); Patrick Swayze and Barbara Hershey as her worried parents; Swank and Shawn Hatosy as would-be criminals with a dimwit plan; Henry Thomas as a drunk driver whose involvement is deeper than we realize; and Colin Hanks as one of three teenage vandals on a fast track to trouble. With falling corpses, graveyard sex, reckless gunplay, and a severed penis, it's all in good, grisly fun (apart from intricate plotting, Marcks has no lofty agenda up his sleeve), and there's ultimately not much point to its random misfortune, but 11:14 is clearly the work of a promising filmmaker, worthy of rediscovery on DVD. Bonus features include Marcks's intelligent commentary, a standard behind-the-scenes featurette, and a useful "character jump" feature allowing viewers to choose a plot trajectory whenever one character encounters another. --Jeff Shannon

Edgy, Darkly Funny and Swayze Crazy June 29, 2009 Richard Ross Imagine 'Pulp Fiction' only with dismembered members and people getting their faces caved in during sex and then having a dog eat it, and you have a pretty good idea of the oddness that takes place at 11:14. The film is cleverly written and stylishly directed by Greg Marcks. It tells a handful of stories about people prowling the night and getting into all kinds of trouble at exactly 11:14. Just as in 'Fiction' all of the stories overlap so scenes are repeated from multiple perspectives. At the center of things is a sexy Rachael Leigh Cook who has no less than three men wrapped around her finger. She's the catalyst for much of what takes place. Her overly protective father is played by Patrick Swayze who is quite funny/scary in his eagerness to watch over his daughter. A drunk driver (Henry Thomas) has an accident while driving under a bridge. Something has been dropped off the bridge and lands on his windshield. Believing it to be a deer, he's horrified to discover it's actually a disfigured human body. Stashing the bloody corpse in his trunk, he's quickly visited by a concerned driver (Barbara Hershey) who calls the cops for him. When the officer (Clark Gregg) shows up he administers a sobriety test, determines the man to be under the influence, and puts him in his squad car where two other people (Hilary Swank and Shawn Hatosy) are already in custody. The driver flees into the woods and in the confusion the other two escape thus setting off a chain of wild events that includes a couple of rowdy teens (Colin Hanks, Stark Sands and Ben Foster) bumming around in a van and vandalizing property and a convenience store shooting by two clerks who try to make things look like a robbery. All of the acting is really good with standouts being Hilary Swank who looks quite sexy in braces and Colin Hanks who's every bit the movie star his famous dad is. This is a really fun ride that seems confusing at times but is logically explained at the end. If anything the ending comes too abruptly leaving you a little disappointed that things have reached their conclusion and the stories have all been explained. A really good movie.
Very well written May 27, 2009 Jennifer C. Haaser (Fort Smith, AR) Brilliant story line. The kind of movie you have to watch a few times before you make all the connections.

Awesome Movie March 23, 2009 Darcy Johns (Pittsburgh PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great movie that everyone needs to see at least once. It is one of those movies that comes around full circle with the story by the end. It has become one of my favorites and I highly recommend it.
Wicked Little Circular Tale Of Instant Karma March 14, 2009 Oliver Towne (Riverside, CA United States) As both Isaac Newton and Buddha have observed, every action begets an equal and opposite reaction. To be is to do, and to do is very likely to be damned. (How'd we humans get so lucky?) This, of course, is a black comedy, and a very ingenious one. Every key player is guilty of something, and they all get what's coming, but in ways that normally don't happen in real life. (Or at least in the span of twenty minutes.) To make the tale even more intriguing, we should learn of all the tenuous strands that connect the minor players to the main ones, and what their ultimate fate is. For instance, what happens to the cop, the ambulance drivers, the other juvenile delinquents, and everyone's moms and dads? Their story waits to be told. But, then, that would be exactly like real life and it would take, well, a lifetime. So, how's your karma, bro'? What? You think you're off the hook? Everything we do has consequences: Lying on an application, cheating on a lover, stealing a candy bar, driving under the influence, running off with your high school student, defrauding charities, invading Middle Eastern countries--you name it, there's a price to be paid. The only question is when and how. (On the other hand, Bernie Madoff made off pretty well. Yeah, he got caught. Big deal. He's 70. It's time for the Soylent Green center, anyway.) (That's a joke. Soylent Green is a hideous, immoral solution to overpopulation and world food shortages. But just think what it would do for your lawn...) Back to the film: Fast paced, clever, diabolically funny, and, oh, yes, Rachel Leigh Cook is quite the hot little sex kitten. What's not to like? (Love those braces on Hilary Swank.)
