Feeling smothered and confused after the death of her mother, Ruby Lee Gissing flees her Tennessee home. She drives south to the panhandle of Florida, because she has always dreamed of living near the ocean. Mildred Chambers (Dorothy Lyman), the owner of a souvenir shop, hires her as a clerk and befriends Ruby as well. Soon, there are two men in Ruby's life: Mike McCaslin (Todd Field) and Mildred's ne'er-do-well son, Ricky (Bentley Mitchum). Although Ruby briefly succumbs to the advances of one of them, by the film's end, she is still on her own, understanding that a new chapter of her life is just beginning. In addition to the picture taking home the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Judd was nominated for Best Actress by the New York Film Critics and won Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirits. Amazon.com An uncommon gem of a film, this story of a young woman finding herself is a marvelous sleeper. Ashley Judd (Kiss the Girls) makes her film debut as Ruby, who moves to a Florida beach town and tries as best she can to earn a living. She begins working in a clothing store and starts dating men, but after some hard choices realizes she must first figure out who she is and what she wants out of life before she settles for something less than she deserves. Writer-director Victor Nunez (Ulee's Gold) tells his tale as an amiable slice of life story without forcing any of the emotion. And Judd gives an astounding performance as a young woman whose quiet inner strength allows her to grow and gain confidence in the person she wants to be. Avoiding all the possible cliches and presenting a positive, realistic, and touching character portrait, Ruby in Paradise is a rare and worthwhile discovery. --Robert Lane

It's so lame, that this film is out of PRINT!! June 1, 2009 J. edwards (al) Ruby in Paradise is a quiet , honest film that is a portrait of a young poor, abused, low self -esteemed, rural tennesee woman. With her parents gone now, she realizes that she has to do something to not end up like many of her friends,...beat-up,barefoot,and pregnant. In the beginning of the film.. you can see she is not just leaving home..she is ESCAPING..She remembers a onetime happy vacation she had as a child in Panama City Florida.and thats where she heads off to. The film captures the essence of what its like to leave a horrible condition and find the courage to start fresh , even when you dont have enough money or support ..you just do it!!..The film is arthousey-,Ashley Judd is so beautiful in the film ,, I dont think she's top her acting skills yet since she did 'Ruby..'. 'Ruby..' is the kind of movie that you'll want to watch after you come home from a god-awful - ear deafening-gun blasting-car smash-ups, CGI [computer-generated images]matinee with your tweens...Just kick back, put on you fuzzy socks, have an iced tea..some really good popcorn and just sink in and take a trip to Panama City, Fla.
Inside the mind of an independent woman December 23, 2008 S. Whitford (North Carolina, United States) I have LOVED this movie since I first saw it back in '93. I have worn out my VHS tape of it and have desperately wanted to see it released on DVD. What gives? I'd like to see a great American release of this film, preferably with some special features about the inspiration for the film and the obvious low-budget (which makes it seem so much more realistic) filming of it.
Why the heck isn't this on DVD yet? March 18, 2008 W.Kim (Los Angeles, California United States) I saw this film in the theatre back in '93 or so, and walked out of the darkness thinking that Judd had a great career ahead of her. Now over ten years later, it seems that R-in-P is destined to be her best film ever. I'd buy this movie in a heartbeat were it available on DVD. What's the problem? No distributor?
I want to buy this DVD too! October 23, 2007 Kok (Malaysia) I love this movie, but couldn't find it selling anywhere. Please release this DVD!
Release the DVD August 31, 2007 Jeffrey B. Garrett (Portland, OR) This is a great film. Ashley Judd's finest performance. Why can't I buy it on DVD?
