3 out of 5 stars Too bad it was cancelled!   November 10, 2009

This was a very entertaining series. My biggest disappointment was the fact that there were only two episodes on season 2, which cost the same as season 1.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written   June 2, 2008

The actresses and actors were capable, the premise had possibilities, but it was so blandly written, that there was nothing to grab onto. No complexity, no evolving mythos, nada. The last few stories of the first season, and a couple of second season stories showed promise, but the rest were not worthwhile. A series that was sabotaged by an underdeveloped premise, and uninspired writing.

    5 out of 5 stars Series   May 18, 2008

I hate that this show ended. I was not happy with the last show it was a cliff hanger. One that will never be finished.

4 out of 5 stars A series with a degree of promise comes to a jagged and sudden end   April 18, 2008

Season One of TRU CALLING was so poorly watched that just about everyone was astonished when it was renewed for a second season. Then everyone was even more baffled when production on the show was ended before a single episode of Season Two was broadcast. FOX has done some very strange and inexplicable things over the years, but the whole now-it's-renewed/now-it's-cancelled dance with TRU CALLING has to rank at the top.

In my review of Season One I mentioned that it simply wasn't the case that Eliza Dushku had taken on TRU CALLING rather than a Faith spin off to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. The latter existed only to the extent that there was talk about its possibility. But absolutely none of the trappings of a TV show were in place. In other words, Eliza chose an actual show that was going into production over the mere possibility that Joss Whedon and Co. might pitch a Faith spin off to some network. But as the first season of TRU CALLING was winding down, there was some talk once again of a Faith spin off. Again, not an actual series, but the idea came alive again. But with the renewal of TRU CALLING, that died once again.

It is hard to figure out what was going on inside FOX. The six completed episodes of Season Two show a lot of promise. They do not show a truly (no pun intended) great show -- at its best TRU CALLING was merely good and promising -- but they show a dedicated production staff and cast trying hard to make the show exceed the limitations of its premise. The episodes were definitely as good as Season One at its best. It simply isn't clear what happened between renewal and cancellation that made FOX give up on the series.

So, for the most part, watching these episodes is a sad experience. They gesture toward what might have been, toward what the show was trying to become when it was unceremoniously shut down. The writers were doing a more than decent job of pushing at the limitations of the series -- Tru being asked by a dead individual for help of some kind, and the day restarting with her having a chance to bring about a change of some kind, if only she can overcome the efforts of Jack (Jason Priestly) to bring about the same outcome as before -- and were developing what appeared to be a more complex overall story when everything came to a dead stop.

Do I recommend this? I guess it depends. If you are looking for a great story and challenging character development, no. To engage in personification, this is a series that was cut off at the knees. It ends suddenly, in the middle of its story, with utterly no resolution of any kind. Some might prefer just sticking with the end of Season One, which brings slightly more closure. But if the all-too-sudden ending doesn't put you off, the six episodes that make up the very brief Season Two are all at least very decent and they do give many hints at the direction the show was heading. In particular I enjoyed the episode where Jack instead of Tru is asked for help by a dead person. It was not merely a good episode, but showed how the writers were doing all they could to bring about innovations to the standard plot progression. So, these set functions more as a hint of what might have been than anything. What there is, is pretty good. The shame is that there simply isn't very much.
