Amazon.com essential video After the success of 1950's Destination Moon and 1951's When Worlds Collide, visionary producer George Pal brought the classic H.G. Wells story of a Martian invasion to the big screen, and it instantly became a science fiction classic and winner of the 1953 Academy Award for Best Special Effects. It's a work of frightening imagination, with its manta-ray spaceships armed with cobra-like probes that shoot a white-hot disintegration ray. As formations of alien ships continue to wreak destruction around the globe, the military is helpless to stop this enemy while scientists race to find an effective weapon. Gene Barry and Ann Robinson play the hero and heroine roles that were de rigueur for movies like this in the '50s, and their encounter with one of the Martians is as creepy today as it was in '53. It finally takes an unseen threat--simple Earth bacteria--to conquer the alien invaders, but not before War of the Worlds has provided a dazzling display of impressive special effects. As memorable for its sound effects as for its spectacular visions of destruction, this is a movie for the ages--the kind of spectacular that inspired little kids such as Steven Spielberg (not to mention Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, whose Independence Day cribs liberally from the plot) and still packs a punch. --Jeff Shannon
Product Description Laden with Academy Award-winning special effects, this chilling adaptation of H.G. Wells' frightening novel detailing a Martian invasion delivers fiery thrills, laser-hot action and unrelenting, edge-of-your-seat suspense. Gene Barry (TV's Bat Masterson) and Ann Robinson (TV's Fery) are among the humans intrigued when a meteor-like object crashes to Earth...but its occupants are definitely not friendly. The assault on Earth is underway, and the Martian machines - hovering "swan"-shaped vehicles of destruction - are both beautiful and terrifying as they cut a relentless path of annihilation. Produced by George Pal (When Worlds Collide) and directed by Byron Haskin (Treasure Island), the War of the Worlds is widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time and received three Oscar nominations.

war of the worlds June 23, 2009 Robert J. Szvetics This dvd is so good that you could really see the wires on the spaceships.I dont know why the wires were not painted out. It has great special features. The audio commentanies are very in sightfull.....
Excellent! June 17, 2009 Kurt A. Johnson (Marseilles, Illinois, USA) When a meteor comes down in an out-of-the-way western town, it seems that they finally have something to put the town on the map. However, when it turns out that the "meteor" is actually a reentry vehicle for a Martian invasion force, its bad news for everyone. Dr. Clayton Forrester (played by Gene Barry) finds himself caught up in the Martian invasion, trying to stay out in front of the invaders, and hopefully find a way to stop them. But, there's surprises out there, some more frightening than he could have feared, and others more wonderful than he could have hoped for. This excellent movie was released in 1953, which might make you expect that it is not worth seeing. But, be ready for a surprise. In fact, this movie is quite excellent! The special effects have stood up quite well, with the Martian war machines still looking threatening and futuristic 55 years later. Also, the story is quite interesting, and the action gripping. I have enjoyed this movie repeatedly over my entire life, and I enjoyed introducing my 15-year-old son to the movie (he liked it too). So, if you want a good science-fiction movie, one that will keep you glued to the screen, then get this movie. I give it my highest recommendations!
Amazing For Its Day June 1, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) I really enjoyed this the first two times I saw it but on the third, several years ago, t seemed to have lost its impact. Maybe that's because I had just watched the re-make and it was pretty hard to top the special-effects in that film. Still.....for its day - over 55 years ago -this "original" movie had amazing special-effects. The alien ships still look cool and probably always will. Gene Barry is fine in the lead role and I appreciated the very ending in which God, not man, is given glory for the cessation of violence. This is a movie where people actually pray for help. I didn't see that in the re-make, of course.
Almost Perfect May 11, 2009 Debbie Pearson (Hawaii,USA) The movie itself was excellent! In wonderful condition, I couldn't be happier. . .my only complaint is not with the condition of the movie. . . Just with the way it got to me. . it took a MONTH ! ! ! I am extremely displeased with MovieMars! They screwed up with the shipping (sending it International)I couldn't track it because the tracking number they gave me was no good! I will think long and hard before I order something from them again (even if I have to spend a couple more bucks)
Classic April 18, 2009 Lorrain D. Huntley (Deroche, British Columbia) We like watching the earlier movies ! Myself I like these older types of movies when they were made because they are not all about sex!!!! The filming is clear and very well done. We both like seeing the older cars and trucks that are in the film as we like the styles back then as we feel that is when they built a good auto!!! We would refer this movie for sale or rent ! The movie arrived in excellent shape and on time!!!!
