Product Description BASED ON THE PROPAGANDA FILM FROM 1936 THAT HAS BECOME A CULT HIT. A STRAIGHT-LACED HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SEEKS TO IMPART HIS WISDOM ABOUT THE DEMON WEED BY TELLING A FRIGHTFUL TALE ABOUT THE FATE OF 2 INNOCENT TEENS WHO FALL UNDER THE SPELL OF THE DRUG.
Amazon.com If the idea of making a musical out of Roger Corman's Z-movie quickie The Little Shop of Horrors sounded weird, stick around for the all-singing, all-dancing Reefer Madness. Deliriously based on the notorious 1936 anti-pot social-guidance film, this is an ultra-campy enterprise that lands somewhere between Rocky Horror and a John Waters comedy. Christian Campbell and the spritzy Kristen Bell play the innocent teens lured into a soul-sapping cloud of marijuana dependence by pencil-mustached pusher Steven Weber and his long-suffering dame, Ana Gasteyer. The cast includes femme fatale Amy Spanger and a cameo by Neve Campbell, who dances her way through one sequence. The musical was written and composed by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney, who re-create some of the kookiest scenes from the original movie ("Faster! Faster!"). Their funniest idea is to frame the sordid saga with a black-and-white story of a government agent showing a public-service film to horrified small-town citizens; he's played by the reliably sinister Alan Cumming, who also pops up in a variety of guises in the film-within-the-film. The only problem with this made-for-Showtime version of the stage show is that camp tends to wear thin, especially at 109 minutes, despite the expert song parodies. Even the original hour-long Reefer Madness got old quick. --Robert Horton

Excellent! June 25, 2009 Mary Thomas (Toronto, ON Canada) I really had no idea what to expect when I saw this film. To be honest I haven't ever even seen the original Reefer Madness or know exactly what it was about other than an old propaganda flick about how drugs are bad mmkay. Anyway, we vapourized before hand and popped this in and we were taken on an awesome ride full of crazy campy fun and great songs. The performances by pretty much everyone were great. The songs are very well arranged and well performed. I just have to say if you like musicals and you like weed then this movie is for you!
Tintilating and ridiculous -a great fun film June 14, 2009 Yelena Tumasyan (NY USA) I love this movie. It's so rediculous and over the top, you are laughing the entire time. The acting is FANTASTIC Cummings, Bell and the rest of the cast do a spectacular job of playing their over-the-top characters. I love the variety of scenarios in the movie. Great music too! I think everyone needs to see this move.
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. April 17, 2009 Danielle R. Ward (Delaware, OH USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I never received my order, nor did the seller respond to my e-mails. Amazon ended up crediting my card for the amount I paid, but I was never given an explanation about why I wasn't getting my DVD.
Just what I thought. January 8, 2009 A. Robidoux (PA, USA) this DVD was okay. Given the title, i didn't expect much, but there were some surprisingly great vocal performances despite the really lame plot. Not a bad film to watch, but probably only once!
My Favorite Musical December 5, 2008 C. Piekarz (Fort Collins, CO United States) If you're into musicals, satire, comedy, or Kristen Bell, this is the movie for you. Even on a shallow level this film will have you laughing from start to finish. If you're paying close attention, and know a little bit about the political drug history of the United States, there's also many, many subtle jokes hidden throughout the movie - note the name of the High school. I can't think of a single reason why anybody should pass this movie by.
